Zedge Ringtones & Wallpapers is the arguably the largest and most comprehensive collection of wallpapers, ringtones and notification tones available in the Google Play Store. It’s certainly not new, but with a busy and bustling community who upload and share all their favourite content, it’s a great place to start with customising the look, feel and sound of your Android device.
Price: Free
Tested on: HTC Desire HD
Content Rating: Medium Maturity
Pros & Cons:
Pros
- Massive range of tones and wallpapers!
- Easy to search!
- Nice user interface!
- Simple to download and apply content!
Cons
- Lots of duplicated items.
Features:
One of the finest things you can do with your Android device is customisation. It’s one of the things that set it apart from those iPhone users. For me, the very first app I look to when I either get a new device, change my ROM or want a fresh start is Zedge Ringtones & Wallpapers. At the time of writing, the app lists 67,076 wallpapers available to download, 551,467 ringtones and 86,947 notification tones. Now, some of these might be duplicates- with the content being community generated you’re going to get shared tastes, but it’s still pretty impressive.
There are 24 different categories of wallpaper to choose from and 27 for ringtones and notifications. It’s very simple to search and browse from items, either via these categories or by the search bar which is very responsive and quick. You can get a good view of the wallpaper you like the look of, and you can stream the ringtones to hear them first, before you download. It’s easy to just add items to your favourites list (without the need to download) so all the content is right there under your favourites section. I personally just add a load as I’m browsing and then try them all out.
On each item you have the choice to download, then the icon turns into a circle which will automatically install the wallpaper as your homescreen. With tones, it asks you what you want to add this to; main ringtone, contact ringtone, alarm, etc. Intuitive and simple. All this is wrapped in a slick UI which, while blighted with a few ads, looks pretty good. If you’re part of the community you can also access your account and content through the app.
There sheer range of content available is pretty staggering, there’s a lot to search through but I’ve never struggled to find great wallpapers and ringtones. I even found my current ringtone on there; a very cool 8bit rendition of the Dr. Who theme! If you’re an experienced Android user, I’m sure you will have heard of and possibly used Zedge already. However, with hundreds of thousands of Android activations every day, it’s great to introduce these superb resources to new users that are currently enjoying Android for the first time.

Usefulness:
Zedge is a one-stop-shop for ringtones, notification sounds and HD wallpapers. For changing the look and sound of your Android device, this is ideal. The app also features a widget which lets you quickly switch wallpapers, straight from your homescreen.
Ease of Use:
The app is simple to browse and there lots of categories to search and browse, in addition to trying out ringtones via the stream player. There are plenty of intuitive and user-friendly features here too. The ability to download and apply a wallpaper with just two touches, customised perfectly for your particular device.
Frequently Used:
You might just find a ringtone and wallpaper that you like and hardly take another glance at the app, however, if you like to change things often, or prefer to have different ringtones for different contacts, or perhaps different phone profiles; work, school, home, weekend, etc. Zedge is a great place to alter the look and sound of your device, even if that’s something you do on a regular basis.
Interface:
The interface does includes those horrible little banner ads here and there but this aside it’s very slick and smooth.
