XnView Retro – create funky look of old-school photos with frames with this app!

XnView Retro is a breezy and simple to use photo-tweaking tool with a flush of cool filters, frames and editing tools. As I recently argued in my review of FxCamera, I don’t think you can try out ‘too’ many photo apps because one might just come along with a completely original filter or two which look great. XnView is a simple app but offers a nice array of effects and frames. It’s free and features no horrible ads- so definitely give it a look.
Tested on: HTC One X
Pros & Cons:
- Easy to use!
- Great range of filers and frames!
- Editing tools!
- Easy to save and share!
- Relatively small resolution images.
- Cropping is very limited.
XnView Retro is a cool little photo editing app for Android devices. Just open the app, upload a photo (either via your gallery or by using your camera), crop, add one of 20 filters and one of 26 frames then save and/or share. One thing I do like about Instagram is just how fast you can alter pictures and then post them. XnView Retro is just as quick to use and offers more in the way of filter/frame combinations.
As I have said before, you never know with a photo editing app whether it contains a filter that just really works for you. I found with XnView Retro a really great filter (called Retro 2 in the app) which really polished off a picture I was editing so I was extremely pleased to find it. The app doesn’t have quite the polish of other applications such as Pixlr-o-matic, but if you’re looking for the right result, it’s definitely worth trying.
Another great thing about XnView Retro is that it is completely and utterly free. Additionally, it doesn’t include nasty adverts so is already a better option than those apps that take up your valuable screen real estate with banner ads. I thought the app could have benefited from the ability to save larger resolution images but the pictures you create are still fine for sharing. Furthermore, the cropping feature is quite limiting but this shouldn’t put you off trying the app out.

I am somewhat addicted to photo editing apps and like to try them all out if I can. If you like tweaking the snaps you have taken on your mobile device, such apps can give a real professional look to them.
Ease of Use:
I’ve managed to review quite a few in my time as an Android reviewer and the thing that stands out about XnView Retro is its ease of use. You can find a filter and a frame in a very short space of time and get the pictures saved and/or shared.
This will depend on the user and how often you edit photographs on your Android device. It’s certainly a stable and fun-to-use app you might want to try again and again.
The interface is quite simple and, while it won’t blow you away, it works well and looks neat.
