X City – Tycoon City Builder Game similar to CityVille on Facebook
Dec 29, 2011 9:40 AM –
X City is cute tycoon-a-like game very similar to hugely popular Facebook games such as CityVille. Start your city off small, before building more and more, accumulate money to progress, increase your levels and unlock new buildings, decorations and grow crops. If you like these kind of accumulation titles, and especially like games like CityVille, this will literally be right up your street.
Price: Free with In-app Purchases
Tested on: HTC Desire HD
Pros & Cons:
- Lots of features to unlock!
- Well designed!
- Helpful tutorials!
- Social cooperation with online friends!
- Very limited in that you can only play for a short while at a time.
- Graphics are pretty simple compared with similar titles.
X City is a capable and detailed city-building sim for Android. Fans of popular accumulation games such as CityVille on Facebook should find X City familiar and fun.
As you progress there are vast amounts of items to unlock as you complete tasks, accumulate money and increase your levels. Gameplay is very familiar; menus to select then place buildings, tap fields to sow and harvest crops, move items as you see fit. There are menus to buy new items and send gifts to fellow players. All these things should be immediately familiar to users.
I guess what makes X City stand out is its online economic affiliation with Papaya Mobile, the online social gaming network. Here you can collect and correspond with friends, share gifts and all manner of other bonuses. The underlying feature here is the transferable currency of ‘Papayas’. Your Papaya account follows you regardless of the game you’re playing, as long as it’s Papaya affiliated. There are quite a few CityVille clones available in the Android Market; for example Virtual City which we reviewed a few months ago. However, if you are already established on Papaya and want to comprehensive city-building sim, this is ideal for you.
Because of the reliance of currency, I found you can only play the game for a short while before you have to wait for things to be restored. Of course there is the often prompted alternative to use real money to buy items, and it often feels like you have little alternative. Without purchases the game can feel quite stunted, and offers nothing new compared to other games. However, if you play a lot of Papaya games, you might well have accumulated more than enough transferable credits to make the game fly along!
X City – Start small and build your city
X City – Level Up
X City – You recieve help via early tutorials with Anny
X City – Found treasure boxes hold bonuses
X City – This 1970s ‘cat’ is one of your citizens
X City – He’s very grateful, all the time
X City – He will probably ask you for a disco later in the game
While you are playing X City it can be both immersive and fun. However, if you run out of credits, etc. and have to wait lengthy spells until elements are restored (crops grown, rents accumulated) then it can quickly become more of a chore to play. However, if you play other Papaya games, have lots of Papaya friends to share gifts and items with, or don’t mind forking out for credits, there is genuinely lots of fun to be had on this comprehensive tycoon-game platform.
If these games attract you then you’ll find this massively addictive. However, it doesn’t really offer anything new compared to similar games so there is no revolutionary ‘pull’ that would compel gamers from outside this genre.
Graphics are quite simple although blazingly bright and slightly garish. There are a few details but, again, compared with similar titles there is nothing here to write home about.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
You can opt to have sound on or off. The sounds included are basic sound effects for tapping on items, collecting money, harvesting crops, etc. There is no music, so it feels often quite stark for atmosphere.
