WiFi Alarm – for setting Alarm Reminders based on WiFi- Networks Install

WiFi Alarm is a useful utility for giving yourself an alarm reminder based on Wi-Fi networks nearby. For example, use it as a reminder to not forget your keys before leaving home or to browse the Internet securely when you frequent that coffee shop with the free Wi-Fi.

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • An easy way to have a visual and audio reminders triggered by Wi-Fi networks!
  • Very easy to set up with the ability to have multiple alarms!

Cons

  • The alarm will continue going off until you dismiss it.

Features:

WiFi Alarm does exactly what it says – it allows you to set alarms for connecting and disconnecting from various WiFi networks. You set your own custom text for each alarm, so it makes it a versatile reminder app. For example, there is a public WiFi network on Long Island, where I live, but I don’t always remember if I’m connected to that, or to one of the private networks I have access to. I set up an alarm to notify me when I’m on that specific network, so I remember I’m public, which means I won’t access certain things, like my banking information.

The one thing I didn’t like, however, was that when an alarm goes off, it doesn’t just beep a few times and then stop. You can set up how it goes off – vibration, audio, text, etc., but as far as I could find, it doesn’t shut off unless you actually hit the button to do so. I would have liked to have a setting to just buzz to dismiss, and then, even if the alarm screen stayed up until I dismissed it, shut off the vibration and audio.

For a phone, especially, where you’re moving around between areas and networks, and not necessarily pulling it out to use every time, this could be a problem. Of course, you could just not set an alarm for those networks, but for some, like the public WiFi I set it up for, I want the reminder when I go to use my device, but I don’t necessarily want to have to pull it out and acknowledge the network change every time. The other option is to use the Briefing Only setting, which will only pop up the text message with no audio or vibration at all. But you can’t set these on an individual alarm basis, which means I can’t have my public alarms silent, with others more in your face. So I guess what I want is for the current features to have more flexibility.

Usefulness:

This is actually very useful if you move around and log in and out of various WiFi networks. Because there is some information you don’t want to transmit over public networks, having that reminder, and being able to set it for specific networks, is a nice feature.

Ease of Use:

The app was very easy to set up, and adding alarms was a simple thing.

Frequently Used:

Once you set up the alarms for your networks, you probably won’t be in the app itself very often. However, depending on how many alarms you have, and how often you move in and out of those networks, you could get the reminders a few times a day.

Interface:

The interface was very clean and simple. The app does one thing, and it doesn’t have any extra frills or anything to distract from that.

Should you Download WiFi Alarm? I actually think WiFi Alarm pretty is solid, and given it’s early in its development, it has a lot of potential to be a utility that will become a must have. It’s definitely worth checking out!

What is the best way to browse the internet securely on the coffee shop’s free wifi? (From the opening paragraph)

To be honest, I always assume you can’t browse securely in a public place. There are apps or techniques out there that supposedly will help, but if I’m on a public network, I just don’t go to certain sites like my banking institutions. I also try to have all my passwords on auto-login. It might not foil someone really determined, but if someone is just looking for keystrokes, they won’t be able to pick them up. In general, I don’t think 95% of people on a public network are out to take your information, but there are a few bad apples, and as long as you take some basic precautions, I think you can foil most of that 5%. As for the ones that are really determined to steal your information that way – I’d be interested in hearing what techniques you guys in our AndroidTapp universe use to foil them? Any other suggestions?

I have installed the WiFi Alarm app, and I can tell you that it is just working as advertised. This is a really really great and useful Android application! And for the issue on the alarm not stop alarming automatically, I think that you have to be more patient. Because it will shut alarming after about 12 seconds or so. But I agree that this 12 seconds can be a bit long. So maybe it is a suggestion to make this automatic dismiss time user definable? For the rest, I am totally satisfied with this awesome and small packet sized app. I give it six stars out of five.

Basic rule: Public browsing is not safe. Period. If it is secured, it is better but the WiFi operator can still be malicious. You cannot know if the app you are using sends out your password as plain text either. I am not even sure with the official apps like Gmail Greader etc. AFAIK they were not encrypting all the sensible information either at least at some point in the past.

It would be interesting to analyze the network traffic with the current apps…

Only thing you can do if you want to keep safe as possible: use VPN when on a public network. Probably costs a little, not all of them are expensive though. You don’t need much bandwidth for those cases right?

Anybody know what happened to this app? It looks really useful, but it’s not available on google play anymore.
