AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Features & Usefulness:

Where’s My Android (aka Wheres My Droid) is awesome! It helps you find your phone when the ringer is turned all the way down or on vibrate.

Remember those remotes they came out with to help you find lost keys? I personally think this is 100% better. I have spare keys, but I would be lost without my G1.

Within the first week I had the opportunity to use the Where’s My Android app after I misplaced the phone while doing a party for work. I had turned the phone down while doing my presentation and couldn’t remember which of the five containers I carried in with me that I had put it in. I used a friend’s phone to send a text to mine and immediately was able to locate my G1.

You can use any phone to text your secret attention word or phrase to your phone to turn up the ringer and play your current ringtone. A separate attention word will give you the GPS coordinates of the phone, but GPS must already be turned on for it to work. Paid versions give you the additional options of choosing a separate ringtone specifically for the app and the ability to email a text to your phone to turn it on.

I would recommend you not share the attention words or your buddies could have a great time turning your phone up randomly, say while you are in a meeting.

How to Setup and Use Wheres my Droid:

Open the app, click “Attention word”, by default it will have “Wheres my Droid” you can either leave this or change to a text phrase you can remember. Same for “Attention word for GPS”, by default has “GPS My Droid”. When the app is installed and you text either of these phrases from any phone to your lost phone, it will play the phone’s ringing tone for the specified duration until you find it (recommend checking “Ring when lost”, “Ring for 5 minutes”, and “Reset Volume” to allow enough ring time to find the phone and restore ring volume to what you normally set it to).

Frequently Used:

Frequency of use is user dependant.

Interface:

Once the app is set up, there is nothing more you need to do for it to work. There are a only a few settings: choose the attention words, set a custom ringtone if you have the paid version and tell it how long you want it to continue ringing assuming you haven’t located your phone.

Why it ain’t possible to enable GPS via SMS, too? :(
    That’s really a deal-breaker.

  2. Deef says:

Cannot find it in the (dutch) market, so downloaded it from the website.

  3. Nark says:

That is an intentional restriction of Android. GPS needs to be manually turned on to be accessed. I leave mine enabled but I disable it in most apps so the radio stays off unless I need it.

    Great app!

  4. DerickJ says:

Does what it claims, but I haven’t had to use it yet.

  5. LadyDi says:

I can’t find it under this name. I see “where is my droid donate” for a $1 and “where’s my phone” for .99

Can you put the developer’s name(s) in your review just in case in the future? Thank you!!

  6. Android Tapp says:

@LadyDi Since the dev removed the apostrophe in the apps name it made it harder to find. Try 1 of 2 ways using our website:

If you’re on your PC, download and launch an app called “Barcode Scanner”, literally scan the QR Code just under the main screenshot before the review.

If you’re on your Android phone, scroll under the review next to the post details and simply tapp the QR Code.

Both methods get you there in the Android Market!

  7. Lady Di says:

Found it. Had to remove the apostrophe. THANK YOU!!

    BTW – love this site!!

  8. ShortyPiez says:

How will you be able to obtain your secret word or phrase if you forget what you set it as?

  9. Scottm5443 says:

Does anyone have this working on the Verizon Droid?

  10. codethief says:

I don’t think that it’d be working on the DROID @Scottm5443 as it’s actually rather a hack and the DROID features a completely different UI. (Noticed that bell to left of the contact information? It’s where alarms are usually displayed.)

  11. codethief says:

Whoops, how come I was talking about the “Contact information” app? I’m obviously too tired already…

Nope, sorry, I don’t know how to get “Where’s My Android” working on the DROID, either.

  12. spanky says:

Does not work on Sprint Hero.

  13. JTD121 says:

Does this work on Verizon’s Droid Eris? Also, know any apps that will lockdown a ‘droid phone?

    -Josh

  14. mladwig says:

Yep, it works on my Droid

  15. Phil says:

How can you text your phone if you lost it? hmmmmmmmmmm.

  16. jcruse says:

kor.im phone locator seems to be the best one that I’ve found. Tried it with my wife’s Eris because it will send you the GPS location of the phone and it worked well (she was right where she was supposed to be :p )

  17. w3lly says:

Great Idea. I gonna try it.

  18. DanfrankTX says:

On the test I have done… It only rings once and I have the the timer set at 5 min… How do I make it ring more than one time?

  19. mallory says:

Is the ‘gps locate’ mean if your phone is off somewhere you can type the word or phrase online and it will locate it? I NEED HELP!

  20. collen says:

We want Lost It in an Android platform pleaseeeeeee. Can’t wait any longer, getting fatter by the minute for I use a nexus one phone. Android Help!!!!!

  21. jordyn says:

Does this app work if your phone is shut off?

  22. Darryl says:

What if someone steals your phone, opens the app, and changes your “attention word for GPS” so that you can no longer use texting to access the phones location?

  23. Sarah says:

This app is amazing!!! I lost my Droid Incredible today and it was on silent. I was googling ways to find my phone and I came across this app. I didn’t have the app on my phone but I was able to install it onto my phone through my computer without even knowing where the phone was. I texted my phone one of the default attention words using my dad’s phone and it rang and since I have my GPS enabled, it sent me the coordinates of the phone and a link to see it on Google Maps. I love this app! 5 stars!!!
