AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Voice control for Android smartphones
  • Update: Vlingo InCar feature added!
  • Brilliantly accurate voice to text app allowing you to speak text messages, email, dial, tweet, and more
  • Speaks incoming text messages and emails, great while driving
  • Super Dialer searches businesses aggregating address, maps, navigation, phone number information and more
  • Can be integrated with any text input

Features:

Vlingo: Words to Action is simply Amazing!!! Vlingo for Android allows yo to dial contacts, dial and search businesses, send text messages, send emails, search the web, open Android apps, perform local searches, and tweet by voice on Twitter. The accuracy of the speech recognition it good too, goes farther the Google’s own integration of voice control for Android.

The app can read incoming text messages and emails via SafeReader component. The voice reads about very clearly and even speaks with punctuation if conveyed in the message; at times some words or phrases get butchered so it’s not perfect. By default Vlingo can read SMS text messages but not those via Google Voice and email has to be setup.

Update: Vlingo InCar was recently feature added which allows you to completely hands-free call, send, reply to and receive text messages and email, plus search the web, open Android apps and more… without ever touching the phone! The InCar feature was initially only available to Sprint customers but soon became available to all phones with Android 2.2+. Note – Vlingo: Words to Actions base app requires Android 2.1+ and the added component Vlingo InCar requires Android 2.2. Check out the live demo below.

Android Advice™. How to Setup Vlingo to Read Email:

Open Vlingo app » tap “Info” » Tapp “Settings” » ”SafeReader Settings”  then “Email accounts” and “Add email account”. Choose email account type; i.e. Gmail, Windows Live Hotmail, Yahoo Mailm AOL, or other webmail. Finally enter your email address and password.

Usefulness & Ease of Use:

I remember a buddy telling about how cool the Blackberry version was and the same greatest has been improved upon for Android. It truly makes operating any Android phone, especially slate form factor phones without physical keyboards and more convenient and easy to use. Even more convenient that the home search widgets the app provides, the functionality can be invoked by longpressing the “Search” button.

Frequently Used:

Once you learn the commands to voice control your phone, it really is a habit changer and how you use your phone.

Interface:

There’s a slick user friendly interface that offers a guides on how to use every feature… open the app and tap on “What Can I Say”? The app also comes with home screen widgets (4×1, 2×1, and 1×1) for quick and easy access.

Does it work w/ bluetooth headsets? Can you hear and give commands using one?

    • Unfortunately no… Vlingo for Android currently supports message read-back (SafeReader) on Bluetooth devices that support ‘Media Playback’. You cannot currently speak to Vlingo through a Bluetooth device on Android devices.

    • @Max UPDATE: If you have Android 2.2 (Froyo) Vlingo now supports Bluetooth headsets via their Vlingo InCar feature!

  2. Max says:

No Froyo just yet… I’m waiting on T-mobile and Samsung to get their act together on the Vibrant (great phone by the way).

    Thanks for the update.

  3. Greg says:

Use it daily and love it! Performs perfectly on my Galaxy S. Looking forward to Froyo features.

  4. William says:

Been playing with the in car feature and all I can say is “Nailed it”! Great job making this app.

  5. JB says:

I used this review to decide to get Vlingo earlier today. Obviously I haven’t had it long but I am totally in love with this app. It is brilliant and works VERY well with amazing accuracy. It isn’t 100% perfect every time but so far between reading me texts, making handsfree calls, and sending several text from speaking it has made only 1 minor error = VERY good accuracy. Makes driving and texting a MUCH safer process. I LOVE THIS APP!!!!

    • JB,

Glad to hear that you enjoyed the review enough the try the app. I use Vlingo daily w/ InCar. It has been a lifesaver and probably prevented many possible accidents during my travels.

Vlingo is superb I was recently seduced away from Nokia symbian. To an Htc Desire running Froyo. I had a Nokia hands free kit fitted to my car, which was superb. One touch voice dialling etc. I have tried so hard to get the many voice diallers to work, but to no avail. It is so hit and miss. But this is fantastic. I cant fault it. It has just become free on the android market. If you dont have it. Get it. Before someone changes their mind.

  7. eric says:

will it work with blue tooth?

  8. eric says:

ok let me be sure. I have the new 4g epic by sprint and it is running 2.1 android system. can I download this app. and be able to speech to text via the blue tooth. at the present the blue tooth has to be off in order for me to voice dial or google search. My blackberry could read, write, and send over the bluetooth, so this is what I am looking for.

    • It’s a weird predicament currently and mostly faulted with the versions of Android. Voice dialing via Bluetooth wasn’t truly supported in Android until 2.2.

Vlingo base app can be installed on Android 2.1+ phones, e.g. Epic 4G, but you need Android 2.2+ to run the “InCar” feature and Bluetooth voice actions using Vlingo.

So essentially it’a limitation in the version of Android your phone has and hopefully Sprint or Samsung rolls out an update soon.

      Hope that clears it up.

  9. Raj says:

Does it require internet connection to work?

when i used wifi, it worked, but when i turned off the wifi it keeps saying, not connected to internet.

Could anyone tell me how to make it work offline.

I would like to use it for making calls and sending texts only which can be done offline.

    Thanks
    Raj

I have a Zenithink ZT-180 Tablet with 1030 firmware and Android 2.1. When I click on Vlingo words to Action I am informed I need a ‘voice recogniser’ before Vlingo will function.Any suggestions? I’ve had no luck looking for one to date.
