AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Tons of cool visual effects to add to camera phone photos
  • Import pictures from your existing photo gallery to apply effects to
  • Offers 10x digital zoom
  • Geotag your location within photos

Cons

  • So far the Pro version can only handle up to 5 megapixel resolution

Features:

Vignette Android App is a nice camera app that can possibly replace the default camera app for most Android phones (although the latest Android 2.2 “Froyo” version offers a limited set of sweet comparable goodies too). Using the app makes you seem like somewhat of a camera phone pro with it’s built in filters and effects:

  • Normal – generic film effect
  • Vignette – focus attention at the center of the frame
  • Porta – Smooth skin tones for flattering portraits
  • Velvia – vivid colors for nature photography
  • Ilford – Classic black and white
  • Plus more like… Toy camera, Vintage, Colour Highlight, Tinted monochrome, Lens effects, Cinematic and even customize filters by combining them

Plus many photo frame effects like rounded edges, oval shaped, Polaroid photo borders, panoramic and more. You can import and apply Vignette effects to photos. Geotag pictures which will save your location in the photos’ metadata. Offers 10x digital zoom (while most Android phones offer a default of 2-4x digital zoom), however we notice going up to 10x won’t do your pics any justice.

Usefulness:

The app adds a level of awesomeness to those bland cell phone pics you may be taking.

Ease of Use:

The on-screen controls consist of photo crop slider on the left, on the right are filters, frames, image resolution quality, white balance, flash and timer toggles. Tip: for Android phones without a dedicated camera button (like Nexus One, HTC Desire, HTC Legend, etc.) tap the screen to snap the photo. ;)

Only caveat… once you save the effect you do not get an original copy to maybe re-edit effects for photos taken with Vignette.

Frequently Used:

As recommended this app could possibly replace your default camera phone app, if that is it case then as frequent as you snap some pics.

Once the developer increase the cap beyond 5 megapixels, I’ll be sure to snag this one up.

Good app. This and Camera ZOOM FX are the 2 best photo apps.

As a photographer I’ve totally ignored the woefully inadequate camera on my HTC Hero, but this little App changes all of that. The camera is still way too slow to capture anything but the more static of subjects, but the effects that Vignette adds make the images really kick.

The resolution isn’t as high as some people may desire, but given the limitations of the lenses on an average phone’s camera, and that the resultant images are meant to look distressed, I think 5 mpx is a good compromise.

There are almost too many options and some are more useful than others but, surprisingly for what is marketed as a “retro” camera, the results are right up there with some of the more cutting edge grungie effects favoured by many photographers. There’s a huge fan base for cameras like the Holga and, sure enough, along with polaroid, retro and Diana styles, one of the presets featured is an emulation of this little gem.

I thoroughly recommend this app; it’s actually made me re-evaluate the usefulness of my HT Hero’s camera – try out the demo and I reckon you’ll be hooked.

Another good app in the same vein is “Retro Camera”. It’s not as versatile as vignette but has a brilliant, fun user interface.

@Iconik: I have to agree with you on this one. It’s hard to justify using the camera on my Evo when I typically have my Canon SLR nearby. I actually use the Retro camera app and my only gripe is the low-quality resolution. I have taken the opportunity to try out the full version yet mainly because of the 5mp cap. For once, it’s a drawback to have an 8MP camera since I can’t use it’s full potential! The demo version of the app will only let you take pics at 1.3MP if I remember correctly.

Your feedback just may have pushed me to buy it anyone and give it a try. Especially when you have a quick still photo, it’s nice to whip out the phone rather than try to put my Canon together for the pic. I’m sure you know what I mean lol.

P.S.: I am by no means a professional photographer, only an amateur that has a love for taking photos.

As the owner of a HTC Tattoo with a QVGA screen, other FREE apps such as FXcamera don’t show up on my android market.
I downloaded the Vignette demo app and like it a lot. I was just wondering if it was worth upgrading to the £2.99 full version to get higher resolution pictures. (I am a poor ex student and £2.99 is a lot to pay for anything for me!)
Or should I just wait until fxcamera is available for QVGA?

Vignette is a stunning little app and, apparently, the resolution isn’t capped – it will go up to the full resolution of your phone’s camera. Unfortunately there are some issues with some alternative roms which cause problems with the resolutions size options.
It’s my best buy for the camera on my Hero so I’d have no problem giving it a 5 out of 5.

I have noticed since the latest update, this app save photos a white line. The photo will display in the preview, but once saved it displays a white line in the middle of the photo taken.

Also I can no longer get to the app from the Market. Is this a temporary problem?
