Viber: Free Calls & Messages is an Interesting Concept, but has the Catch-22 Problem of needing more Users to be Useful Install

Viber: Free Calls & Messages is an Android and iPhone application that lets you make free phone calls and send free text messages to other users that have Viber installed. When you use Viber, your phone calls to any other Viber user are free, and the sound quality is much better than a regular call. You can call any Viber user, anywhere in the world, for free and now also text them.

AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Free calling and texting to anyone else who also has Viber installed.

Cons

  • Only works if you have a lot of friends also using Viber.

Features:

In theory, I like Viber a lot. It’s a dialer/communications replacement app that allows you to cut the expensive voice and text plans to the bare minimum, since you can call and text through Viber for free. However, the caveat is that it only works (the free part, at least, you could still use it as a regular dialer if you wanted) with other users running Viber on their device as well.

The Android release follows the previous launch of Viber on iPhone, so the potential to have the vast majority of your contacts on here is decent. The problem is that it is still in beta, so the number of contacts who also use it will be very slim. This is the traditional catch-22 for apps of this sort. If enough people use them and it catches on, it could be a powerful tool, however, until more people use it, it’s just taking up space on the phone and not being used. The trick for the company is getting enough people to install it as early adopters and leave it running until the mainstream catches on.

Overall, I really didn’t experience any problems with the app, even though it is still in beta. When you launch it, you can see your recent/missed call list, your contacts, the keypad/dialer, messages (which is where the texts through the system will go) and more, which gives you a list of items such as inviting friends to join you on the service and sharing it on Facebook and Twitter.

I like that the call log shows everything, not just calls made through Viber, which is why I think it can be a full-on dialer replacement. This is a key feature that lets it play well with all your contacts, instead of relegating it to the background. Likewise, the contacts section will also bring up all of your contacts, letting you sort them by showing only those who are also on Viber, all of them at once, or only the ones you designate as favorites, which also includes, at the bottom, your frequently contacted list of numbers. For anyone who is on Viber in the non-Viber exclusive lists, a small icon will show next to their name.

My only real complaint, other than not having anyone I know also using the service yet, is that the icon in the notification bar telling you that you are connected to the Viber server never goes away. You can’t deactivate it or dismiss it, so if you’re a freak for clean notification areas, like me, this will drive you batty. I hope in the final release, the developers offer an option in settings to turn off the notification bar icon.

As far as battery life goes, the developer claims that it won’t impact it at all, but in my tests, I found my battery life lasted slightly less long. I can normally go about a day on a full charge with my normal usage. With Viber active, I found I could go about three quarters of a day. It’s not a massive drain, but enough that if you regularly push your battery to the limit between charge cycles as it is, this might effect your decision to use the app.

Usefulness:

If you have enough friends and contacts who are willing to give Viber a shot, this could be a great way to cut your monthly cell phone bill, but not loose any of the unlimited functionality you’re used to. Especially with so many carriers getting rid of their unlimited packages, apps like Viber are going to become more and more popular and useful as time goes on.

Ease of Use:

All you have to do is install the app, give it permission to read your contacts, and then start making calls and texts. If you want to be proactive, use the tools in the “more” section to help the company promote it and invite your friends to join you so the user base will grow more quickly.

Frequently Used:

Again, this depends on how many people you communicate with are also using Viber. If there are a lot of them, this could become your full-time dialer and text message replacement app, used as frequently as you use those now.

Interface:

Other than the purple color scheme, Viber has stuck to a layout and interface that is close enough to the standard Android dialer that it is very easy to pick up and start using.

AndroidTapp.com Rating!AndroidTapp.com Rating!AndroidTapp.com Rating!AndroidTapp.com Rating!AndroidTapp.com Rating! (4.0 out of 5)

Should you Download Viber: Free Calls & Messages? I’d say yes, give it a shot. With enough people adopting it, Viber has the potential to be something great. It’s limited install base is a major reason I’m only giving it 4 stars right now, along with the battery drain and notification icon, both of which very well could be addressed before the app officially leaves beta. This is most definitely an app, and company, to watch.

You can turn off the icon in the Notification bar by going to More > Settings > Show Notification Icon. This simply turns off the icon and doesn’t affect the way you are notified about incoming calls, messages etc.

    Great app!

First, thank you for a great review. We’re thrilled to see so many people interested in our application.

About the problem raised in the article, regarding the notification icon: in our latest version in Market we have removed the icon by default, while enabling it is possible manually through Viber’s settings.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Hi, is there anything that can be done to stop the battery from being drained, I find that on my sony ericson, the battery needs to be charged almost every few hours, I charge it in the evening and its totally drained the morning after? I just downloaded the app weekend just gone..

      • By Viber on January 11, 2012 at 7:59 am:

Please make sure that Viber is the cause for the battery drain by isolating Viber (having no other apps running) on a device with stock ROM (custom ROMs may cause this problem).

We conduct strict testings in our labs with several devices and other than when making a call (when it is natural for the battery to be used), we did not came across any significant battery drain when Viber was simply running in the background. Furthermore, over the course of over 15 hours, on average the battery use was only 2%.

You can find additional information on tests performed by Viber users themselves, which show similar results, at:

        Hi Aboud,

We are suspecting that the authorities in Syria have decided to block Viber in the whole country, and that is why you are experiencing this issue. Unfortunately there is not much we can do to help :(

You may try contacting the authorities and ask for the reason for this block.

      Hi Debbie,
      Sorry for the delayed response.

Viber itself (the app and the service) TOTALLY free – meaning we (Viber) don’t charge anything from you.

Since Viber uses the internet to function, both sides of the conversation must be connected to either WiFi or 3G. If a user is connected to WiFi – that user is not paying anything for sure. If he’s connected to 3G, the user *may* be paying his cellular company for the data (Viber uses 0.3MB per minute of call), but that depends on the specific data plan that he has with his cellular company, and needs to be verified with them.

First tine barely audible and other party unable to hear me breaking up. Archive attempt excellent quality for 15 seconds then my end broke up.

      Hi David,
Please verify that also the other sides is connected to a high-speed WiFi network (if you want to thoroughly test it, both of you need to switch between a few different WiFi networks in order to isolate the problem).

Also – please note that Viber does not officially support MyTouch ad iPhone 3G (only 3Gs and above), and that may be the cause for the problem.

          Hi @Iris -

          1. Viber automatically synchronizes with your regular phone contact list. So deleting a contact only from inside Viber is not possible, since the contacts list are bound together.

          2. This sounds like a feature that concerns your phone itself (or Android), so Viber doesn’t really have any connection to this action. You might want to contact an Android forum for support on this one :)

      Let’s do this -

Test Viber when both sides are connected to a high-speed WiFi network.

Please make sure neither you nor the other side are connected to networks that might be blocking Viber (for example – a router running a firewall).

      1. First, please try uninstalling and reinstalling Viber when connected to different WiFi networks. Does it work now?
      2. Also, please make sure the following ports are enabled on your routers or firewalls:
      TCP: 5242 + 4244
      UDP: 5243 + 9785

(if you are not sure how to enable ports, contact your router manufacturer)

Please note that Viber does not officially supports Tablets at this stage, but you should still be generally able to install and use it.

First, if you can’t download it from Market, please try downloading it from our official HelpDesk at: http://bit.ly/rqbZEw

Now, in order to register, you’ll need to use a regular phone number (not the same one as you used on your personal phone) to receive the SMS or automated call with the code. Once you have the code, use it on your Tablet, and you’re good to go :)

Also, please note that there might something else in your phone interfering with Viber’s installation.

Hello. I have the same problem as the First comment. Every time I call it’ll ring normally but once the other person picks up, it goes to Speaker Phone. I have uninstalled and re installed but that doesn’t do anything. I have looked at the settings. Check and unckeck the speaker option and nothing. I can’t seem to turn off the speaker.

What device are you using? Which version of Android is installed?

      @Donald -
About the switching to GSM calls –

When you make a Viber call, make sure your screen stays purple (Viber) and does change color (regular call). Sometimes the call is switched to a normal cellular call because your internet connection is disrupted or the destination contact is temporarily not recognized as a Viber user.

When this happens, a message pops up alerting the user that the call is switching to a regular, cellular call (thus costing money). The user has to accept it to continue the call.

About the lock problem – our new version 2.2 is planned to be released very soon, and it should hopefully solve this problem. Once available, we would appreciate to receive your feedback :)

I have a HTC Android phone – and the Viber app for it is too buggy. When I made a call via Viber, it went to GSM and made a call without informing me. I was overseas and now I am going to have to foot a huge phone bill!

In addition to that situation, when my phone is on locked mode, I don’t receive ring-tones when people are trying to call me via Viber. Only when I go unlock my phone do I see a bunch of missed Viber calls.

Unfortunately, Viber does not officially support Wildfire yet. It is a relatively rare device, and there are some internal problems in Wildfire that make it difficult for us to implement Viber’s voice engine on it, for example. We are doing our best to adapt Viber to more and more devices, and we hope to have good news soon.

      We apologize for the inconvenience.

What device are you running Viber on? Is it an officially supported device?
You can find the full list of supported devices in our website: http://bit.ly/rqbZEw

    @Ann -
Nope. If you do what you described, Viber is going to be 100% free for sure :)

    @hamid -
Please try removing Viber, wait 24 hours, reinstall and try again (make sure you try both the SMS and the automated call options). If this doesn’t help, contact our support team at http://support.viber.com and give them the details of the problem.

I have the same problem as hamid (July 22, 2012 at 6:44 am): “the number you entered can not be associated with a viber account”. I tried uninstalling it and waited for awhile but always getting that info just to get the code. I had it installed and working well before on that same phone and mobile number. Then recently, I was not hearing anyone on the other line even though they could hear me. So I uninstalled the Viber and was trying to install again but kept on on receiving that message on the phone. I hope you can help me with this problem

    Hi Viber,

There are iPhone and Android phones. Both of them are connected to the same Access Point for Wifi sitting in the same room. I could not hear the other party while she can hear me.

When she switched to 3G from Wifi then we were able to hear each other.

    What is the problem here?

    Thanks in advance.

It could be that the network you are connected to is blocking Viber’s traffic.

      1. First, please try testing Viber when connecting to a few different WiFi networks (in order to pinpoint the source of the problem). What are the results?
      2. Also, please make sure the following ports are enabled (“forwarded”) on your routers or firewalls:
      TCP: 5242 + 4244
      UDP: 5243 + 9785

(if you are not sure how to enable ports, you may contact your router manufacturer)

The thing is that both phones are connected to the same AP. While one can hear the other cannot. Does it still mean it is related with the router/FW config? If so I suppose both parties should not be able to hear any other.

Sometimes 3G reception could be low, and this is something we cannot control. Naturally this affects Viber’s call quality and results in disruptions and broken sound.
We are continuously trying to improve our handling of 3G, so you can expect better performance as newer versions of Viber are released.

Meanwhile, WiFi- WiFi calls on Viber should generally be very clear and are free of such disruptions.

This warning message can be disabled for the cases when you try to call non-Viber users through Viber (there is a checkbox inside the pop up window that allows this). However, it cannot be disabled for cases when you try to make a regular call to a Viber user, and that is because we have encountered many complaints from users who accidentally made a regular call to Viber users, and thought it would be free as well.

I have a friend who lives locally to me and has an older version of Viber on an iPhone but has not updated it, however whenever I try to call her (without using Viber) it says I am unable to make the call as she needs to update her version of Viber before I can make a call, and I am unable to call normally. Please can you help me turn off the default “call using Viber” setting? Thank you

      Hi,

First, please make sure both sides indeed have the latest version of Viber installed. You may also uninstall, reboot your phone, then reinstall Viber (note that this will unfortunately cause your message history to be deleted).

Also, make sure the connection on both sides is not the reason for the problem, by testing the calling feature when connecting to a few different WiFi networks.

Please note that Viber does not officially support Tablets, and this may be the reason for the problem you’re experiencing :(

However, you may still try to add contacts through Viber itself (you have an option to create a new contact there) or through your Tablet’s native contacts app.

Annoying feature… Viber notification that new version avail. even if notifications are turned off. Why do i need a seperate notification from the stock play apps one? If every app did this i would have a screen full of notifications. Like all my other apps, i will upgrade in due course and don’t need special reminders all the time. You (viber)might also consider that many users like to wait a few days after a release to see from ratings and comments that it is stable (or i and my friends will keep current version) before updating. Please allow us to turn these extra notifications off. Thanks. (end rant)
