Viber: Free Calls & Messages is an Interesting Concept, but has the Catch-22 Problem of needing more Users to be Useful Install

Viber: Free Calls & Messages is an Android and iPhone application that lets you make free phone calls and send free text messages to other users that have Viber installed. When you use Viber, your phone calls to any other Viber user are free, and the sound quality is much better than a regular call. You can call any Viber user, anywhere in the world, for free and now also text them.

AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Free calling and texting to anyone else who also has Viber installed.

Cons

  • Only works if you have a lot of friends also using Viber.

Features:

In theory, I like Viber a lot. It’s a dialer/communications replacement app that allows you to cut the expensive voice and text plans to the bare minimum, since you can call and text through Viber for free. However, the caveat is that it only works (the free part, at least, you could still use it as a regular dialer if you wanted) with other users running Viber on their device as well.

The Android release follows the previous launch of Viber on iPhone, so the potential to have the vast majority of your contacts on here is decent. The problem is that it is still in beta, so the number of contacts who also use it will be very slim. This is the traditional catch-22 for apps of this sort. If enough people use them and it catches on, it could be a powerful tool, however, until more people use it, it’s just taking up space on the phone and not being used. The trick for the company is getting enough people to install it as early adopters and leave it running until the mainstream catches on.

Overall, I really didn’t experience any problems with the app, even though it is still in beta. When you launch it, you can see your recent/missed call list, your contacts, the keypad/dialer, messages (which is where the texts through the system will go) and more, which gives you a list of items such as inviting friends to join you on the service and sharing it on Facebook and Twitter.

I like that the call log shows everything, not just calls made through Viber, which is why I think it can be a full-on dialer replacement. This is a key feature that lets it play well with all your contacts, instead of relegating it to the background. Likewise, the contacts section will also bring up all of your contacts, letting you sort them by showing only those who are also on Viber, all of them at once, or only the ones you designate as favorites, which also includes, at the bottom, your frequently contacted list of numbers. For anyone who is on Viber in the non-Viber exclusive lists, a small icon will show next to their name.

My only real complaint, other than not having anyone I know also using the service yet, is that the icon in the notification bar telling you that you are connected to the Viber server never goes away. You can’t deactivate it or dismiss it, so if you’re a freak for clean notification areas, like me, this will drive you batty. I hope in the final release, the developers offer an option in settings to turn off the notification bar icon.

As far as battery life goes, the developer claims that it won’t impact it at all, but in my tests, I found my battery life lasted slightly less long. I can normally go about a day on a full charge with my normal usage. With Viber active, I found I could go about three quarters of a day. It’s not a massive drain, but enough that if you regularly push your battery to the limit between charge cycles as it is, this might effect your decision to use the app.

Usefulness:

If you have enough friends and contacts who are willing to give Viber a shot, this could be a great way to cut your monthly cell phone bill, but not loose any of the unlimited functionality you’re used to. Especially with so many carriers getting rid of their unlimited packages, apps like Viber are going to become more and more popular and useful as time goes on.

Ease of Use:

All you have to do is install the app, give it permission to read your contacts, and then start making calls and texts. If you want to be proactive, use the tools in the “more” section to help the company promote it and invite your friends to join you so the user base will grow more quickly.

Frequently Used:

Again, this depends on how many people you communicate with are also using Viber. If there are a lot of them, this could become your full-time dialer and text message replacement app, used as frequently as you use those now.

Interface:

Other than the purple color scheme, Viber has stuck to a layout and interface that is close enough to the standard Android dialer that it is very easy to pick up and start using.

AndroidTapp.com Rating

AndroidTapp.com Rating!AndroidTapp.com Rating!AndroidTapp.com Rating!AndroidTapp.com Rating!AndroidTapp.com Rating! (4.0 out of 5)

Should you Download Viber: Free Calls & Messages? I’d say yes, give it a shot. With enough people adopting it, Viber has the potential to be something great. It’s limited install base is a major reason I’m only giving it 4 stars right now, along with the battery drain and notification icon, both of which very well could be addressed before the app officially leaves beta. This is most definitely an app, and company, to watch.

    Hi. All the time that I try to use viber on my iphone 5it doesn’t let me dial. I mean non of call icons work. And when somebody tries to call me it shows me as busy while I am not for sure. I removed it and installed it several time but it works properly for one or two time and again the same problem occurs.

    I currently use Viber on the Galaxy S3 and have even used it on iPhone 3G and I must say that I am quite impressed, as are all the people who I contact throughout the world are. We have never had issues with Viber in terms of clarity and texting has been great as well.

    The only (minor) issue I am having on my Galaxy S3 is that Viber wants to force close each time I try to tap on a message that pops up in my notifications. The only way I can see the message is to find the icon in my apps section and tap it instead. Whilst it is an issue, it is VERY minor for me. Just wanted to give the heads up on it and if anyone else experiences it, just tap the app icon instead of the notification.

    Have you tried uninstalling Viber, rebooting your iPhone, then trying to install again?

    Thank you for the kind compliments :)
    We plan to release a major update of Viber for Android soon, and once it is available please test it and see if the problem persists. We’d be happy to receive your report :)

    Hi. I have an IPhone, my husband has a Nokia Lumia. He is currently in Venezuela I am in SoCal. I can call and connect with other Viber users but not him. It always comes up as cannot connect but can send a text. He calls me via Viber and it comes thru my regular phone, not Viber. How can I fix this or do I need to? Are we being charged or is this correct? And how can I get my connection to work? Thank you.

    @Jennie Kogak -

    It could be that the network you (or he) are connected to is blocking Viber’s traffic.

    1. First, please try uninstalling and reinstalling Viber when connecting to a few different WiFi networks (in order to pinpoint the source of the problem). What are the results?
    2. Also, please make sure the following ports are enabled (“forwarded”) on your routers or firewalls:
    TCP: 5242 + 4244
    UDP: 5243 + 9785

    (if you are not sure how to enable ports, you may contact your router manufacturer)

    @renee -

    Please make sure that Viber is the cause for the battery drain by isolating Viber (having no other apps running) on a device with stock ROM (custom ROMs may cause this problem).

    We conduct strict testings in our labs with several devices and other than when making a call (when it is natural for the battery to be used), we did not come across any significant battery drain when Viber was simply running in the background. Furthermore, over the course of over 15 hours, on average the battery use was only 2%.

    You can find additional information on tests performed by Viber users themselves, which show similar results, at:

    Why viber call tends to drop call on an average of 3 minute limit? It happens to me few times and usually the call is dropped every 3 minute or so. What causes the problem and could this problem be fixed?

    • By Viber on January 30, 2013 at 2:38 am:

      Sometimes 3G reception could be low, and this is something we cannot control. Naturally this affects Viber’s call quality and results in disruptions and broken sound.
      We are continuously trying to improve our handling of 3G, so you can expect better performance as newer versions of Viber are released.

      Meanwhile, WiFi- WiFi calls on Viber should generally be very clear and are free of such disruptions.

      What you are describing shouldn’t happen, unless there was a connection problem on either sides at the time when that message was supposed to be sent.

      Please let us know if the problem persists, or it was just a one-time issue.

    What device do you and your contact have?
    It could be that Viber’s calling service is not supported on either of the devices (like Blackberry, some Nokia phones, etc.), and this is the reason for not being able to make the call.

    In the future we plan to add Viber’s calling ability to more and more devices. We recommend that you stay tuned for news ;)

      When messages are sent but not delivered, it means that the other side (the destination contact) is not online to receive the messages.
      Please try to test the messaging when switching between a few different WiFi networks in order to identify the source of the problem.

    When you register, your code is automatically inserted into Viber when received.
    If you’re having problems receiving it, then please try removing Viber, wait 24 hours, reinstall and try again (make sure you try both the SMS and the automated call options).

    In addition, you may try to register to Viber with a different number (for example – your home landline number, a friend’s number, etc.), in order to determine whether the problem is specific with your number, or a general one.

    @mon -
    In the new 3.x version of Viber, this can be customized through your phone’s settings.

    @cungte -
    Please note that Viber does not officially support your device yet, and that may be the reason for the problems you are experiencing. Here is the full list of officially supported devices: http://bit.ly/Hm5k9p
    We are continuously working to adapt Viber to more and more devices, and we hope to make your device fully compatible soon. When we have news, we’ll let you know.
