It’s been a roller coaster ride for lead game developer Gameloft in their efforts to release high definition games for Android outside Google’s Android Market. Recently Gameloft gave away a free version of Let’s Golf for HTC EVO 4G and Google Nexus One phones with mostly success. Today, however, is a high point as they are now offering free trials of 11 of their games by visiting their website from your higher end Android phone or directly from your PC via free gameloft android games.

Here’s a list of the game titles (see our Android game reviews on a few):

  1. Real Football 2010
  2. Asphalt 5
  3. Assassin’s Creed
  4. Dungeon Hunter
  5. Gangstar: West Coast Hustle
  6. Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X.
  7. Hero of Sparta
  8. Let’s Golf!
  9. Modern Combat: Sandstorm
  10. N.O.V.A. Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance
  11. UNO
  12. and coming soon, the game of the blockbuster movie, James Cameron’s Avatar

Please note: Android HD games from Gameloft are available for the latest generation of handsets, including: HTC Incredible, HTC Desire/Bravo, HTC EVO 4G, HTC Google Nexus One, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, Samsung Vibrant, Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Droid, Motorola Droid X, Motorola Motoroi, Motorola Milestone and coming soon to the Samsung Epic 4G and the Motorola Droid 2.

Let’s hope Gameloft nails it with this try before you buy campaign and avoid previous debacles. Check out the games and tell us what you think in the comments, furthermore, how was the purchase process if you decided to purchase.

I attempted to install 4 of the games available but was terribly disappointed that they all request many more permissions than a game would ever need, including the ability to send SMS messages.

Because of this, I refused the install, and I didn’t try, let alone buy, anything. Which is a shame, because the 4 games I picked looked great, and probably would have lead to sales.

    • I noticed that there where a boat-load of permissions asked. I will find more out about this. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

      • Len Darker says:

Did Gameloft offer any information on what they actually *do* with the permissions their games ask for?

I just downloaded the trial version for Dungeon Hunter, and the requested permissions range from being able to receive and SEND SMS to changing wifi status, alter network settings, and so on.

If I were to write a trojan, I couldn’t ask for much more in excess of this.

Now, Gameloft seem to be respectable and all, but I couldn’t find information on why these permissions are required, yet.

      • HRJ says:

I have downloaded Asphalt 5, but I am also worried about the huge lists of permissions required.

SMS/Phone call history? Why the heck would a game require it?

One possible reason could be if the App was designed for an earlier version of Android (before 1.6 or similar), in which case the phone assumes that all permissions are required.

But it is hard to believe that such new games were targeted for that old versions of Android.

Any news from gameloft? I’m interested as well

I just got word from Gameloft that if you decide to purchase one of the games and you are on Verizon you need to use a credit card. When you enter the date make sure that you put the full year of the expiration date or it will not go through.

Just visited the above posted link on my Nexus One only to be informed that there were no games available for my handset. What gives?

  4. Babak says:

    Hi.

Would you mind telling me that, these games can be played on Acer Liquid?

    Thanks a lot.

  5. salle says:

Typical. My HTC Desire is recognized as “unknown” (running stock froyo)

    • @salle: Not sure on this one. I would try posting on their Technical Support section of the forum and see if you receive an answer about it.

Have you tried downloading it from the site on your computer first then transferring it to your Desire? Seems a little too much work I know but it may allow it to work.

  6. face778c says:

  7. andriod says:

  8. qamar says:

  9. RDilus says:

  10. mike says:

ive tried downloading 3 or 4 of the games and i can never finish them, i always get an error, even without my screen timing out, i cant complete the downloads on my phone, its not worth trying anymore for me, such a shame
