AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Get the heads-up on police speed traps, speed cameras, and red light cameras
  • Get audible alerts, change audio themes… have Governor Arnold tell you where the cops are hiding :-)
  • Shows traffic

Cons

  • Can contribute to driver distraction when reporting hazards and driving
  • Not well valued in areas where there are not many people using Trapster
  • Be sure the “Quit” the app when done as it will run in the background and drain battery

Features:

Trapster Android App gives users the heads-up on police speed traps, speed cameras, and red light cameras with crowd-sourced user input. Crowd-sourced data is great for real-time GPS input as you get information from drivers prior or concurrent with you. For example, a user may have seen a police car hiding in a lot radaring people, if they tagged them using Trapster, you come using Trapster along the same path you can [cough... cough...] adjust your speed (however stationary uses are the best uses).

See traps reported by other users with approximate distance, last reported by and date/time stamp. Questioning the validity of a trap… vote for it. The audio feedback quality of the default voice is excellent and sounds natural. Sound themes are changeable for Arnold Swarchenegger, Austin Powers, Bill Clinton, and George Bush parodies. Even get directions for your route.

Just like Waze Community GPS Navigation app it requires a large user base in your driving area with accurate database of hazards to fully take advantage.

Usefulness:

Trapster really shines for stationary items like red light cameras. Something most metro cities install to quote-unquote “increase safe driving”. Could possibly save you some dough if you know where they are to possibly avoid or adjust to them.

Ease of Use:

The basic use of Trapster is similar to using any GPS device. It lays atop of Google Maps (Pinch Zoom available for Android 2+ phones) and shows possible hazards. Signup and login for Trapster to “Report a Trap”.

Frequently Used:

User dependent, intended for use every time your drive.

Interface:

It’s built atop familiar Google Maps for mobile and displays large buttons with icons that represent various hazards. Tap them and they become larger displaying more detail.

    very good application

  2. mburfeind - TeleNav says:

any idea how long it keeps the data? these kind of tagged locations go out of date pretty quickly. seems like a useful app but needs a ton of ugc to make a difference.

  3. m4rk0 says:

Does this work over google turn by turn navigation? If not then I see no way that I’d ever use this.

    • Josh says:

Yea, this seems like a very important aspect of this application. If it doesn’t work over navigation apps, I’m not too sure how useful it is as the places I frequent I already know of certain speed trap areas..

  4. tim says:

no sound… any reason why I can’t hear it? all settings say sound should be working… but no sound/voice.
