Content Rating: Everyone
Pros & Cons:
Pros
- A nice dungeon crawler game for Android.
- Leveling, finding & upgrading equipment, managing potions – all those elements of RPGs are there.
- There is enough content here to keep you busy for a while.
- There is a tutorial that you can access every time.
Cons
- It’s obvious that the game was made by someone who’s first language isn’t English. Nothing against them, but it does mean that phrasing is odd most of the time, grammar is way off, and sometimes the word choice is confusing. It was enough to make it hard for me to get immersed in the game.
- While the emphasis is on traps, to be honest, I found that I never used them except on the bosses. I wished it was better integrated into the gameplay.
- The story itself was a bit weak, and didn’t give me the character building I’d like to see in an RPG.
Features:
Trap Hunter: Lost Gear is a dungeon crawler for Android, and it does a decent job. When you start a new game, you get a little bit of story – not enough, in my opinion, but at least an attempt was made to have one. From there, you’re brought to the tutorial the first time you play and after that you start in the “town”. You then have the option of replaying the tutorial, going to the market to sell and buy items, go into your home to manage your equipment, or go to the guild, which is where you get new missions.
Missions themselves are a mix of exploring, fighting, and finding items. The controls for walking around are touch screen, and they were very responsive. The only complaint I had with the controls is that when you get your character moving, you have to let him stop to change direction. This isn’t a big deal most of the time, but on the bosses that are chasing you around while you try to set traps, fight and avoid their attacks, the delay in changing directions can be fatal.
The traps themselves, I expected more of, to be honest. Even in the summary, the game makes a point of saying your character isn’t a fighter and has to rely on traps. And yet most of the loot you find are weapons, and I didn’t use traps at all except to try and slow down bosses enough to get in a few hits without taking damage myself. For a game named Trap Hunter, I was hoping for something other than the usual hack-and-slash style of gameplay.
My biggest issue with the game overall was the text. All of it is very poorly done. You can tell the developer doesn’t speak English as their first language, and I don’t want to sound like I’m picking on them for it. But it really made it difficult for me to enjoy the game because all of it was either phrased in odd ways that made me stop and re-read it a few times until I understood what it was trying to tell me (there were a few things, like the traps in the tutorial, that I gave up on understanding altogether and just figured it out in the gameplay itself.) It meant that I really couldn’t get into the story, and that even in the menus, I got jarred out of the game every time I went to go read something. Normally this isn’t something I would point out in a review beyond mentioning it in passing, but in this case, for this type of game, it really had a huge impact on my overall enjoyment.

Fun Factor:
I love a good RPG/dungeon explorer, so I had a good time playing this game, I have to admit, there were quirks that pulled me out of the game, which lowered my overall enjoyment, but it was still a fun game to play.
Addictive:
If the story is improved, this could be a game you come back to on a regular basis. The levels are long enough, but I’d like to see more enemies and loot to find to keep them interesting. As stands, it is a good game you’ll go back to, but I don’t know if I’d call it so addictive you can’t put it down.
Graphics:
This is the single best part of this game. The graphics are beautiful. And the game runs well on top of that, which isn’t always the case. Seeing the level of detail in the graphics, you can really tell someone put a lot of time and effort into the game.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
The game doesn’t use the accelerometer or vibration, and the soundtrack is your standard RPG-style music. I didn’t find that it added or took anything away from the game.
