Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Bright and detailed color graphics!
  • Challenging puzzles!
  • Familiar platforming environment!
  • Cool items including Telewarp, Freeze-O-Matic and Slug Stacker!

Cons

  • Might not have enough diversity for some players.

Features:

Toki Tori is a cute and fun platformer/puzzler hybrid featuring the little chicken Toki Tori (first debuting on Game Boy Color handheld console a decade ago). Toki Tori has to collect a set number of eggs contained within the level to complete it. However, there are plenty of obstacles including hedgehogs, ghosts, traps and evil slugs. Mostly logic will help you along the way but often you will require the use of extra help. Bonus items include telewarping, freezing and slug sucking!!

Controls are quite simple, just press where you want Toki Tori to go and if she can, she’ll move there (saying that, I don’t know for certain Toki Tori is a ‘she’ or not). There are buttons along the left of the screen for bonus items, such as telewarping and you usually only have a set number of these per level. Using these at the right times and conservatively helps you progress and there is an appropriate learning curve which is very sympathetic.

Levels usually have a certain path to take, although there is still plenty of autonomy to complete the level. You often have to deploy a good sense of timing to avoid baddies because once you send Toki Tori on her way it’s a bit tricky to suddenly control her route. Still, this makes for an extra element of challenge which is really good.

Fun Factor:

Toki Tori is a fun little puzzler with a cute theme and a nice range of levels. There is something familiar about the repetitive gameplay that might make you bored of the game after a while, there doesn’t seem to be much here to keep you interested- even the bonuses aren’t exactly mind-blowing. Still, it’s fun for a short while even if puzzle games aren’t your thing.

Addictive:

Toki Tori is hugely addictive if you’re a fan of the genre. I don’t think there’s enough to entertain gamers who aren’t into platform games or logic puzzles, but if you’re familiar with such games this is a great addition to the genre and is both compelling and addictive.

Graphics:

Graphics are very smart, without being incredible. It reminded me very much of smooth SNES or Megadrive graphics. Cartoony, due to the nature of the app and quite slick with little delay or lag. It works for the game. Maybe it’s wrong to expect more of Polarbit, but when you see games like Reckless Getaway you wonder if not as much visual love has gone into Toki Tori as with their racing titles.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

Sound is basically cute music, nothing extraordinary but it works within the context of the game.

Should you Download Toki Tori? Toki Tori is a fun title with compelling and addictive puzzles. It doesn’t perhaps do anything revolutionary or new, but it works well, level design is good and it’s a nice challenge for fans of logic and puzzle games. It is a fun platformer but not something that will draw gamers in. If puzzle and logic games are your cup of tea, this will tick most of your boxes. If you’re more of a casual or action gamer, you’ll probably find this a little boring.
