AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Free video calling on Android and iPhone over 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi
  • Supports phones without front-facing camera
  • Decent video quality
  • No cell minutes used
  • No account signups (for now at least)

Cons

  • Some kinks need to be worked out in the app such as audio and reports of battery drain

Features:

Tango Video Calls is an impressive video calling app that allows totally free (for now) video calling between Android and iPhones, and supports phones with or without the front-facing cameras. What’s that you say… why use it without a front-facing camera in your phone? Well… if stationary you can get creative and use a mirror to see the other caller. Unfortunately this is what I had to do with my puny Nexus One when chatting with iPhone and HTC Evo buddies.

Once connected the app allows you to toggle the video and mute buttons, if you have a front-facing camera you can swap the either front and back cameras, and end the call.

Video & Audio Quality

I found even over 3G the video quality is just above decent, however audio is horribly low unless you use earbuds or Bluetooth headsets.

Usefulness:

Tango Video Calls is more WOW factor, but definitely useful! With similar apps I’ve seen deaf people communicate, family members connect across countries, soldiers see loved ones and lift spirits, so I’m sure the same and more can be applied here. What’s unique about this app is not only did Apple allow it in their app store, unlike Apple’s product it works over cellular networks.

Ease of Use:

I was shocked that there was no sign up process nor ads in this free app (that remains to be seen later I guess). Once you install the app it auto-fills some simple information about yourself like name, phone number, and email address associated to your phone, you confirm and start inviting friends. Once you’ve populated with friends you simply tap their name to connect.

Once connected be sure to tap the icon in the lower right corner represented by video camera icon and the letter “T”, to toggle your camera.

I am just curious if anyone will make an external bluetooth camera that will work for applications like this. I have a Droid X and I would love to read my kids stores while on the road. Using the mirror seems like a doable thing however a little bluetooth camera on a tripod would be awesome…..

    Is something like that possible?

You’re not the only one. My husband downloaded this on his Samsung Galaxy and tried getting me to download it on my Motorola Dext, but I can’t find it in Android market either. And when I tried to scan it it says it cannot find it. I went to the website on my phone and it says item cannot be found.

Tried all those and they don’t work. The scanner as I said before comes up with an invalid code and it isn’t listed in the market on my phone. And there is no mirror for this app as it says.

I downloaded it for the Mytouch 4g, and am trying to connect to a user with the Iphone and it just dials and says that it can’t connect. Any ideas? Also, it won’t let me toggle the Tango tab to turn on my video.

Well the iPhone 4 and the HTC Evo are both compatible phones. As are the oPhone 3 and the Samsung Galaxy S. UNfortunately they are the only phones that ARE compatible.

It uses only your data connection. If you don’t have unlimited, your only charges would be because of the data usage.

“phones without a front-facing camera”….presumably this should read
a ” rear-facing camera” just like the rear-view mirror in a car. Every camera is front facing otherwise you would always be taking pictures behind yourself !

    • By Antonio Wells on February 5, 2011 at 12:16 pm:

One would think a little common sense would be used here but I guess not. Also not sure if you’ve heard, seen or ever had a smart phone with two cameras. They industry standard differentiation of cameras is “front-facing camera” the camera in the front of the phone facing you, and “rear-facing camera” the one on the rear of the phone pointing away from you.

Sorry this isn’t mirrors in a car this is cameras so the analogy was totally inaccurate. Finally can you seriously expected to reference cameras as opposite of their true position and expect consumers to understand you. A little common sense goes a long way.
