Lookout, mobile security software firm, today launched Mobile Threat Network, a platform that automatically detect threats and offers protection for mobile app stores to avert users unknowingly downloading malicious apps. Verizon V Cast customers will be the first to receive the protection, other app stores can tap into this feature as well with their API. I have personally spoken numerous times with the founders of Lookout and expressed my own frustration with detecting malware with mobile apps; noting the general consumer is not aware of what they are downloading and more important are unaware smartphones are even capable of getting viruses. I'm impressed to see them implementing a solution that is more proactive about 'piece of mind' app shopping. I equate it to Google's superior spam and malware filtering in Gmail, whereas, it just should be an advocate in the background protecting your personal information.Read Full Article
Lookout, mobile security firm, caught the nasty little booger named DroidDreamLight over the weekend trying to steal unsuspecting consumers personal information. The lighter variant of DroidDream, which according to Lookout could possibly be from the same camp, was found in more than twenty Android apps in the Market. When an incoming voice call is received the Trojan is able to contact remote servers and supplies the IMEI, IMSI, Model, SDK Version and information about installed packages. It also is capable of downloading and prompting installation of new packages, though unlike its predecessors it is not capable of doing so without user intervention, according to Lookout.Read Full Article

"Additionally, the malware is very aptly named – it was configured to only run in the evening (from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m.) -- a time when the owner of an infected device would most likely be sleeping and not notice any strange behaviors on the phone."Read Full Article

Wow! A recent VentureBeat article put the blogosphere and smartphone industry on its heels when a reported score of wallpaper Android apps were accused of being malicious. The wallpaper apps created by "jackeey, wallpaper" and "IceskYsl@1sters!" are indeed the same developer under separate accounts, and accused of sending private sensitive user data to servers in China to a website www.imnet.us. The worse part about all of this is no one, I mean no one fact checked accurately. VentureBeat, The Wall Street Journal, CNET, Fast Company, Fortune, PC World, Computerworld, Gizmodo, AppleInsider, etc. the list goes on and on and everybody jumped the gun in reporting the issue. No one asked the developer about it nor really looked into the methods Lookout used in building it’s report called the App Genome Project.Read Full Article
