After rumors of the Sidekick kicking the dust T-Mobile brought back the messaging experience but it's got Android 2.2 (Froyo) under the hood so you know the capabilities are now injected with steroids! Speaking of messaging, the T-Mobile Sidekick 4G, will have group texting and cloud texting; to messaging friends or groups from a computer. The phone has social networking built in, packs video calling, plus theoretically 4G capable on T-Mobile's HSPA+ network. The hardware includes classic 5-row QWERTY keyboard with four external buttons and has signature slide-out touch enabled screen. Verizon starts selling it's first 4G LTE Android smartphone, Thunderbolt by HTC, for $249.99 with two year contract. New Thunderbolt owners will need a Verizon Nationwide Talk plan plus 4G LTE data plan; which Nationwide Talk plans begin at $39.99 monthly access and an unlimited 4G LTE data plan start is $29.99 monthly access. The 4G phone will come with mobile hotspot capabilites for up to 8 devices included through May 15 for no additional charge. After May 15th you have to cough up $20/month for 2 GB of data. Verizon announced yesterday that they would have 4G LTE available to over 110 million customers in 38 different metropolitian areas by the end of the year. The covered areas will include over 60 commercial airports across the nation. Lots of things happening at CTIA this week! Verizon expects the LTE network to produce speeds between 5 - 12 Mbps downlink and 2 - 5 Mbps uplink. This network is built upon the 700 MHZ spectrum that they acquired back in 2008. This should keep Verizon in the running for providing fast data connections for it's customers as other networks increase their speed such as Sprint's 4G network and T-Mobile's HSPA+. We recently asked developers and consumers what 4G apps can they think of given the increase mobile Internet speed on devices such as HTC EVO 4G and Samsung Epic 4G. Some pretty intersting ideas came back such as streaming HD TV, live social video streaming, video phone calls and video chat sessions while mobile.
