T-Mobile will be releasing an Android Firmware update that includes a number of bug fixes and most notably includes Google Voice Search, Google’s app for voice activated searches. Though this app has been available for other platforms such as the iPhone for some time, G1 owners are finally able to receive it. The update is not the sought-after Android Cupcake update many people want, but said to include:

Fixes:

  • Comcast fails to download more than 1 email
  • “Messages” Stability Issue
  • WiFi forcing a logout of IM
  • No reminders for calendar items.
  • G1 hanging at the G1 Screen

New Features:

  • Voice Search (New Google feature for searching) Gripe Alert: The app falls a bit short of the version Google created for iPhone in that you have to tapp the “microphone” button first to speak your searches, whereas you simplye hold the phone to your ear and speak with the iPhone iteration. This is due to the lack of using the G1′s accelerometer to determine when lifting the phone to your head and the missing most important proximity sensor.
  • Support “Check For Upgrades” (New feature to check for system upgrades)
  • Ability to save pictures recieved as MMS
  • Ability to report offensive comments in the Market as SPAM

Below are some screenshots courtesy of T-Mobile’s Official Forum and Jeff Hamilton, Software Engineer, Android team.

Tips on how to Save MMS (Picture Messages) to SD Card on Android:

  1. From the Home screen, slide open the Applications menu.
  2. Tapp Messaging.
  3. Tapp the message containing the image.
  4. Tapp and hold outside of the actual image.
  5. From the drop down tapp Copy attached to SD Card.

Tips on how Mark Comments as Spam in the Android App Market:

  1. From the Home screen, slide open the Applications menu.
  2. Tapp Market.
  3. Browse to and view an application’s comments.
  4. Tapp and hold the offending comment.
  5. Tapp Mark this as SPAM.

  1. Matt says:

I got this update on Sunday and thought it was cupcake. I was really disappointed because I was expecting the soft keyboard, video cam, etc…

Voice search is innovative and works well, but seriously, you look like a fool talking into your search engine, most people will just type their searches.

Is there voice search for normal google searches on your desktop?
