T-Mobile G2 Android Smartphone has 4G Speeds and Specs Revealed

After two years in the debut of the first ever Android smartphone, the T-Mobile G1, the U.S. wireless carrier has finally released some juicy specs on the next generation 4G mobile Internet speed phone, the T-Mobile G2! Designed by HTC, the phone ships with Android 2.2 (Froyo), 3.7 inch screen with a unique hinge design that opens to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard, 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and autofocus, HD video recording at 720p, 4GB of internal memory for Android Apps, and [unsure why but] 800 MHz Snapdragon processor versus industry standard 1GHz.

T-Mobile will offer existing customers first dibs at pre-ordering it later in September then open it to all others. The price is still undetermined but assumed to be $199.99 with two year contract and data plan.

More T-Mobile G2 Specs:

  • HSPA+ (operates at today’s 4G speeds and not available everywhere) theoretical peak speeds of 14.4 Mbps
  • Dedicated Quick Keys for one-touch access to your favorite Google shortcuts and applications
  • Adobe FlashPlayer enabled Web browsing experience
  • Pinch and zoom functionality for Web browsing and photo gallery
  • 4GB internal memory with pre-installed 8GB micro SD card, with support for up to 32 GB of external memory
  • Built-in 3.5mm headphone jack, stereo headset and Bluetooth support
  • Swype keyboard text input for fast, accurate communication

I personally have been looking for a viable T-Mobile Android phone to replace my Nexus One, the Samsung Vibrant came close but I still use it as a backup. This phone looks tempting as we’ll see if it replaces it.

So what about you faithful G1 owners. Here’s the next generation… are you still going to hold on or upgrade? Let us know in the comments below!

Everything about the G2 appeals to me….except the keyboard. Again, HTC fails in the keyboard with 3 rows. G1′s keyboard is/was the best feature. The Slide appealed to me b/c of the keyboard too, only to learn to hate it because it lacked an individual row for the numbers. I use swype exclusively on my Slide because the keyboard pretty much sucks. HTC should also get on the ball about rolling out Froyo for the Slide. >:(

Sadly, the G2 will be dead before it hits the shelves. The fact that it has an 800Mhz processor, and Android 3.0 will require a 1Ghz processor means it will never see an upgrade. At least not OTA, rooted users should be able to overclock to 1Ghz, but what about John Q Public? $500 for a phone that will not be updated. Bummer for G2 owners.

This is untrue. There are no requirements for Android 3.0, only “recommended” specs. I am sure that HTC and T-Mobile will push a phone onto T-Mo’s network that has 3.0 when it comes out, and the G2, Nexus and Vibrant look like the most viable phones to me. 800 MHz is still a lot of juice, even for John Q Public.
