SushiChop – slice & dice flying fish to become ‘SushiMaster’ in this game Install

SushiChop is a new take on the familiar ‘Fruit Ninja‘ genre where your finger becomes a razor sharp knife, this time tasked with chopping fish in a sushi restaurant. It’s simple to play initially, but both addictive and challenging as the game progresses.

Price: Free, plus In-App Purchases

AndroidTapp.com Android Game Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Challenging and addictive!
  • Excellent graphics!
  • Good sound!
  • Three modes of play!

Cons

  • Tough on beginners.
  • Not especially original.
  • It’s a freemium game and there are frequent ads and prompts to upgrade/make in-app purchases.

Features:

SushiChop is a cute slicing game where instead of hacking up fruit, as in the popular Fruit Ninja, you chop up fish in a sushi restaurant. If you chop the fish fast enough, and avoid the rotten fish, you complete trays of sushi and progress to the next wave. There is a wide assortment of fish available and gameplay get progressively harder as you move through the waves.

There are three modes of play to choose from. Firstly there is ‘SushiChop’ which has you slicing random fish as they are thrown into the air. ‘SushiMaster’ has you creating sushi dishes to order, which means you can only slice up the fish selected- much trickier. SushiKids is a special mode for children that doesn’t have stinky fish, provides more time to play and larger fish.

The graphics and sound are both excellent. The visuals are smooth and vibrant, making it an additionally fun game to play. The slicing sound effects are great and you can probably predict that the background music is the kind you’d hear in a Japanese restaurant.

While the game is similar to many other slicing/chopping/ninja games available in the Google Play Store, and therefore not particularly original, it is at least a different theme. I’ve not played these kind of games very often and did find SushiChop a little difficult to get into and challenging to do well.

The game is essentially a freemium title, meaning it doesn’t cost anything to download but provides the option to make in-app purchases. Such games work well if there is a reasonable threshold of gameplay to be had before the need to make purchases becomes apparent. However, with frequent ads in the game and on-screen prompts to upgrade, you aren’t perhaps given enough freedom to play it as you would like without making in-app purchases. However, it could be that, as I’m a beginner to this genre, I perhaps found it harder and less engrossing than more experienced gamers.

Fun Factor:

As it features a few different modes of play, SushiChop is lots of fun. Definitely try the main mode first to build up your skill before trying out SushiMaster which is far tougher.

Addictive:

I think the popularity of games like Fruit Ninja reflect the addictiveness these kind of games have. SushiChop is no different and very immersive- I imagine even more so for people who already like the genre.

Graphics:

The graphics are bright, detailed and very well designed. The fish, as they fly through the air, look vivid and colourful. Even the stinky fish, surrounded by the awful green stench, look pretty cool. Other game aspects- like the menu and store are really polished and look good.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

You essentially have the sound effects; slicing, swishing, knife-sounds which are pretty good, and then you have the background music which tries very hard to sound like that which you’d hear in an authentic Japanese restaurant. Both are pretty good and compliment the game well.

Should you Download SushiChop? If you’re a fan of games like Fruit Ninja, SushiChop is a competent and challenging variant. Recently included as one of Google’s ‘Featured’ apps in the Play Store, it has lots of polish and is fun to play. I think it’s quite tough on beginners and the requirement to make in-app purchases is never far away, but the game is nicely designed and features cool graphics and sound. Definitely check it out if you like the genre.

I downloaded this to play after fruit ninja stopped working on my mobile.. this is pretty fun but somehow just not as smooth and addictive as fruit ninja is, in my opinion.
