Super Monkey Ball 2 – Roll & Twist into this Addictive & Utterly Fun puzzle game! Install

Super Monkey Ball 2 is an immeasurably cute, accelerometer-controlled adventure where you have to guide monkeys through a series of fiendish mazes and levels. The graphics are brilliant 3D and sound is also superb. There are a whopping 125 levels to plunder through and a variety of mini-games and quirky features. Without further ado, it’s time to start the ball rolling. :)

Pros & Cons:

  • Awesome graphics!
  • 125 mazes to complete!
  • Includes mini games!
  • Great sound!

Cons

  • Might be a bit quirky for some people.

Features:

Super Monkey Ball originally launched 12 years ago as an arcade game with a cute banana shaped joystick, before finding its way to GameCube and then other consoles. It has now finally found it’s way to mobile devices in the form of Super Monkey Ball 2. The game is an infectiously adorable and accessible, yet fiendishly challenging puzzle game. You control a monkey- and there are four to choose from- around a series of mazes. The monkey is in a transparent sphere, a bit like a hamster ball, and you must tilt your device using the accelerometer to guide the ball around. The aim of each level is to collect bananas and eventually find your way to the ringed portal before the time runs out.

The thing that stands out about Super Monkey Ball 2 is the serious depth the game has. Not only do you have 125 levels of this stuff, but the game also features a set of cool mini games to try out. There’s bowling, target (where you fly your monkey onto a target board) and monkey golf! Each of these have multi-player capabilities and are perfectly playable games in their own right.

There are four cute monkeys to choose from. I’ve not really identified much of a difference in the way the monkeys perform, but they are each unique. Choose from Aiai, MeeMee, Baby or GonGon. I imagine if you’ve been a fan of Super Monkey Ball games in the past these probably have their own back stories and character features.

I was aware of these games but always felt it was a bit brash and quirky for me. The music alone is loud, bouncy and incessant; like being stuck on a cheap fairground ride. However, you can turn this off if you want to. I am, however, incredibly pleased I gave it a go because I thoroughly enjoyed it. The learning curve is excellent and you never feel like a level is too difficult. The landscapes and locations are gorgeously rendered and the 3D graphics look amazing, certainly worthy of a far more powerful console experience. What is most overwhelming is the depth of gameplay- with all the levels, plus mini-games and multi-player aspects of the game, it’s huge. As you might guess, the game does need a hefty additional resource download. Also, I wouldn’t expect this to work on any low end devices, the graphics alone will push your Android quite hard so it needs some processing power to make it work.

Fun Factor:

Super Monkey Ball is loads of fun. I guess in some respects it’s not dissimilar to a 3D Sonic the Hedgehog adventure with the rolling and collecting. However, because the game elements do not end with this, adding cool mini games and multi-player support, there’s a lot of enjoyment packed into one game.

Addictive:

Yes, massively so. I think the learning curve is just right, none of the levels I played through felt too tricky and I just felt very engrossed and keen to progress through them. It’s insanely difficult to put down and it can keep you playing for hours.

Graphics:

The graphics are awesome. Very 3D are quite detailed. I felt the primary colours were a little overwhelming at times and it could have done with more variety in shades here and there but the animations and visuals are top notch and very well polished.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

The accelerometer is paramount to successfully completing the level and it works flawlessly here. You do occasionally need to recalibrate after prolonged playing, but this is simple to do. The sound is very good too, although the music is pretty oppressive unless you turn it off.

Should you Download Super Monkey Ball 2? Super Monkey Ball 2 isn’t a cheap game but it’s packed with features that makes the price good value for money. You can as easily get addicted to the mini games as you do the 125 stages in the main game. Add to this the rich fluidity of the graphics and addictiveness and suddenly the $3+ isn’t quite so bad. If you have a good device- and my relatively mid-range HTC Desire HD (similar to an HTC Inspire 4G) handled it very well- definitely give this huge and impressive game a run.
