Here’s a bit of innovation in the financial app sector. Square, a mobile payment solutions firm started by co-founder of Twitter, has launched for Android, iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Think if PayPal and tiny credit card transaction devices had a love-child you’ll get Square.

The app in combination with a tiny dongle inserted into the 3.5mm audio jack of smartphones allows merchants to swipe the magnetic strip of credit cards for payments. If you don’t have the dongle funds can still be sent and received provided both parties have a Square account. This is an app initially geared at small business owners but has the potential to reach everyday consumers.

Key Highlights of Square Services:

  • Works on Android, iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad
  • No Merchant Account needed, No contracts, monthly fees, or hidden costs.
  • Free credit card swipe dongle (with credit check and approval).
  • Receipts can be emailed
  • Rewards on purchases

If mobile payment solutions is something you have been looking into, this is one to try. We’ll be testing it out as we’ve been waiting for it to come out of beta for a while. Oh, we’ve placed QR Codes to scan and links to download the app above.

Sounds like a cool idea. Now if only their website worked…. :(

I have my card reader and it doesn’t work with the iPhone app – you HAVE to type it in. The card reader works with the iPad app, though. Guess we’ll have to wait for another update to be able to swipe cards.

My first and last transaction on squareup has not been a good one. I was promised the payment would be in my bank account in 2-3 days MAX. 24 hours after swiping it was supposed to be in my bank and 1-2 days after that it would be cleared in my bank account. It has now been over a week and im missing my $1000. The “tech” is saying theres no problem, some take a while. Thats not acceptable, my client is mad and took his business elsewhere.

BIGGEST RED FLAG, I CANNOT FIND A PHONE NUMBER TO THE COMPANY, IT IS NO WHERE ON THE WEBSITE, ONLY EMAIL. DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE WITH YOUR MONEY.

Why did you make your first transaction a $1000 one?

Did the idea of first trying a $10 or $20 deal to test ever occur to you?

Your “client” quit you because you couldn’t take his money? Sounds more like a “customer” than a “client”

I want to learn about this product/service and use it in my business.

I want to take your comment seriously but…..

Isn’t Clear Wire, that wireless internet provider also the same, in that they don’t provide a direct phone number to call? You have to search a while?
Well, I eventually got a phone number for Clear Wire….maybe the same would be for Square UP?

I just got this app..have taken 5 payments…i am a hairstylist and rent a booth..I have to say…i love Square. The payment is recieved. It is approved within 24 hours by Square then deposited into my bank account. My banks policy on wired deposits is 3-48 hours which is not Squares fault, as they deposit it within 24 hours….In the past ive owned my own salon…and Square and bank take just as long as any merchant credit card company….so to halfbreeddave…..you need to get Square!….great buisness move for a small buisness person! And Niko John..i too agree that 1000 dollars was really dumb to do on a first payment…and i can guarantee that since that post…you got your money….

I am hoping that this is not a total scam~since they now have my name, address , dob & fed id #
i have yet to get the scanner
the email they sent verifying that it had been mailed has a bogus tracking number on it
emailed the company (after searching all over the website for an actual email address)& got a response back saying they would mail another one …that was last week…so far no scanner

I’d request a new scanner to be mailed to you. In my old neighborhood, I unfortunately wouldn’t always get my mail. Don’t just look at SquareUP as the fault, look at our postal system too…
