Sprint: HTC Evo 4G Launch Day Sells More Than First Three Launch Days of Palm Pre and Samsung Instinct

Sprint is starting off good with the hot new superphone and even breaking their own launch day smartphone sales records with the HTC Evo 4G. The previous title holders were Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre, now Android powered Evo is supreme.

Update from Sprint: The total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was in line with the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined. [Not Three Times More Than First Three Launch Days of Palm Pre and Samsung Instinct Combined as originally titled]

Friday sales of HTC EVO 4G marked the largest quantity of a single phone sold in one day ever for Sprint – the record was previously held by both Samsung Instinct™ and Palm Pre™. In addition, the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined.

The record sales has put a temporary shortage in some stores with stock anticipated to refill, so if you haven’t pre-ordered or it up either Sprint, Best Buy, Radio Stack or Walmart stores… you better run fast!

I suspect that when/if the iPhone 4th gen product announcement today shows that the EVO is the top phone on the market right now, that sales of the EVO will go up even faster. I know of several people, myself included, who didn’t get an EVO on Friday because the iPhone announcement was only three days away, and there’s a chance, ever-so-slight, that the new iPhone might be the latest must-have app-phone.

While I doubt it, I didn’t doubt it enough to bet on it with real money in the form of being the first in line for the EVO. ;-)

So I’m curious.. What did you decide? I think the new iphone that isn’t even out yet just doesn’t match up with the power of the EVO.. Of course i’m not bias as I have purchased 6 since friday for myself and friends who have made the switch.

Well, I’m still not decided, actually. The “retina” screen and longer battery life of the iPhone 4 are intriguing, and kept me from running to get an EVO all through the afternoon. The seamless integration of the iPhone family into all my Mac & other Apple products/services is also a strong tie. My Nexus One just doesn’t meld with things as easily. I mulled on it most of the day whenever I had a few free minutes to think about it.

Finally, around 8:00 PM last night I decided I at least wanted to physically hold and see an EVO, so I went to the local Best Buy. The EVO is much larger than I imagined, it was a bit overwhelming at first. It’s also much lighter than I thought it should be based on that size. The screen is just amazingly huge, which is a big plus to my almost-50-years-old eyes, but the new iPhone’s sounds much sharper, and looks better in this pic http://bit.ly/bgjCFA. A major disappointment with my Nexus One is the AMOLED screen’s total unusability outdoors, and over-saturation of reds, it looks like both the iPhone 4 and EVO will be improvements in that regard. There’s no WiMax 4G in my part of Los Angeles (yet), and no word from Sprint if there ever will be. The EVO owners around town that are reporting picking up temporary signals near downtown have all reported never a signal in the SF Valley, even in areas that are sure to be the first part of the valley to get WiMax, so the most important reason to get a 4G phone remains irrelevant in my neighborhoods.

Bottom line on the decision, I would have grabbed the EVO for at least the 30 day test drive California law allows for on cellphones, but the store was out of stock. I also plan on grabbing the new iPhone for testing when released. I currently carry an iPhone 3G[s] and a Nexus One around most of the time (the N1 gets the honors when only one phone comes with me), and I’m suspecting that in the end, I’ll end up with an EVO and an iPhone 4, just because I like to have the latest tech (and overpay cell companies for plans I don’t use – LOL). I might call around to local BB and RS stores this morning to see if any are in stock, but I’m not sure; 5 minutes with EVO didn’t convince me it was a must have for me at this time. The iPhone 4 announcement also didn’t convince me that it was a must have item for me at this time.

I think what I really want is a Nexus One with the iPhone 4′s display technology in a 3.7″ screen that’s available on Verizon/Sprint/AT&T. One thing is sure, I will never buy a T-Mobile phone again, the service is priced great, but it just sucks – too many dropped calls, missed-calls, and lack of 3G coverage even here in Los Angeles suburbia.
