Today Sprint announced they’ve flipped the 4G LTE switch for the Chicagoland area. This coverage includes: Chicago and downtown, Addison, Bolingbrook, Des Plaines, Downers Grove, Kankakee, Rockford, Joliet, Naperville, Palatine, Plainfield, Ill., along with Gary, Ind. This brings the current total number of cities to 32, with an additional 115 cities in coming months says Sprint. In a fight coming from behind in the LTE race with other major U.S. wireless carriers (Verizon & AT&T), Sprint seems committed to its infrastructure roll out.
I can attest first hand as a few weeks back, Sprint invited me on a rooftop of the Hyatt Hotel in Chicago to show the equipment upgrades (video coming soon). Basically, the new infrastructure will allow them to enable faster 4G LTE mobile Internet speeds (in a switch from WiMAX), and penetrate building farther to improve exisiting 3G service.
