Spirit HD is an excellent Arcade & Action game for both Android Phones and Tablets. Featuring action packed spirit trapping action, 3 modes of gameplay, in-game scoreboards, and Hexic-like 3D graphics which are sure to seduce any gamer. Spirit HD also includes both the tablet and phone version of the game with a single game purchase through the Android Market; preventing you from paying twice for the same application.

It is an incredibly enjoyable arcade game for Android. The object of the game is to trap as many hostile spirits as possible without being touched by them and destroyed. You are a ghost who must circle around hostile spirits to create wormholes to another dimension and transport those beings to the other side. There are many different types of enemies and obstacles and the difficulty of the game is determined by the game mode which you select.

There are three different game modes to Spirit HD: Classic, Extreme, and Pulse. In Classic Mode you start with only 3 enemies and work your way up to higher and higher difficulties as you progress through the game. Initially you only deal with green spirits that slowly gravitate towards your character and are easy to capture. However, as you progress through Classic Mode you will encounter crushing spikes. These spikes move quickly across the game map and attempt to impale your character on the way across. These spikes are much more difficult to capture than the standard green spirits and even more challenging enemies show up as you continue to progress. Another interesting thing that happens in Classic Mode is that the background of the game environment changes as you increase in difficulty. Initially the game map starts as a calming blue background and then moves into more intense colors like blood red, green, or orange for higher difficulties.

In Extreme mode the difficulty starts off much harder than in Classic Mode. Extreme mode starts you out facing spirits with long tails made of tiny triangles and yellow spirits that move very quickly and attempt to surround you. As you progress into the second level of extreme mode you face these same monsters as well as the crushing spikes and that is before you have progressed into the really difficult levels of extreme with rotating laser guns tracking your every move.

Finally, in Pulse mode you have to face similar challenges as in both Classic and Extreme mode, but you have to do so with a twist. In Pulse mode you must make contact with moving pulse bubbles in order to form a net to capture the spirits. This makes the game much more challenging as your screen becomes filled with hostile spirits and the only way for you to clear them is to jump from one bubble of safety to another. You will never have realized how easy you had it on both Classic and Extreme mode until you try out Pulse mode. I also feel like Pulse mode becomes much more difficult faster than classic mode. I went from capturing individual spirits to having the whole screen criss-crossed with moving spikes in a matter of a wave or two. In Classic mode you have much more time to become adjusted to the gameplay before you encounter these more difficult and more advanced spirits.

I absolutely loved the feel of Spirit HD. If you have ever played Hexic 3D on the Xbox 360 then you will know exactly what this game feels like. You are constantly being pushed in to corners and having to fight off oncoming enemies. The graphics are fantastic for this game and really drew me into playing it more just because of the incredible visuals. I also loved that this game was just as impressive on my Motorola Xoom as on my Xperia Play. Spirit HD does an excellent job of maintaining the same level of quality for the game on both the Tablet and the Smartphone and all for the price of one application. That is a deal just too good to pass up.

Also Spirit HD has an in-application high score system. Although the game lacks OpenFeint which is a big disappointment from such an excellent game; the scoring system does allow you to compete with yourself and with friends in Spirit HD. Unfortunately since this is a local high score system you can only compete with other players’ scores on a single device. Hopefully OpenFeint will be integrated into Spirit HD in future updates for the application.

Fun Factor:

Spirit HD is an extremely fun game to play. I would compare to Hexic HD for the Xbox 360, Hexic Clones on Android, or from the point of a retro gamer Pac Man. Spirit HD combines the fun of avoiding hordes of baddies and the challenge of capturing those same baddies in combos without exploding. The graphics for Spirit HD are incredible and the music does a great job creating an enjoyable gaming atmosphere. This is one of those rare gems that you will find yourself constantly going back to when you have free time.

Not only is this game incredibly enjoyable, but it is twice the fun because you can download both the tablet version and the phone version for the price of just the phone version! If you are looking for a fun arcade game to play on your Android device, because you are bored of Fruit Ninja and Hexic then download Spirit HD!!!

Addictive:

Spirit HD is very addictive to play. The gameplay is intense and challenging, the graphics are spectacular, and the music is just what you need to keep you playing. The in-game high score system also gives you a way to challenge yourself and others to keep playing and set goals for yourself within the game. However, I would like to see OpenFeint support in order for it to provide a global challenge instead of just a local challenge and allow serious gamers to spend more time solidifying their rank as number one Spirit Player on a global network.

Graphics:

The graphics for Spirit HD are spectacular! Spirit HD does an excellent job creating a sci-fi 2D environment with moving backgrounds, glowing spirit creatures, and colorful morphing wormholes and all in a unique 2D HD. Although there are games that provide a more detailed environment in 3D there are not many games which offer a better visual experience in 2D. One thing is certain with this game; you will not get bored with its colorful high def environments even after hours of gameplay!

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

Spirit HD makes no use of the device’s accelerometer nor its haptic feedback, but it does have an excellent soundtrack. The music in Spirit HD is reminiscent of Hexic HD or other arcade games that you could play on a console, smartphone, or even in an arcade. The music is fast paced, but zen-like creating a peaceful gaming environment. This is definitely a game that you want to play with the sound on!!!

The game also utilizes very arcade like sound effects for the various actions in the game. Such as the spirit exploding,  wormhole creation, and wave completion.  Wormhole creation sounds like a light saber being turned on, wave completion sounds like a sound effect from Fusion Frenzy, and exploding sounds like your ship dissolving in the old space invaders. All of this culminates into an awesome futuristic gaming environment which makes for an incredibly fun gaming experience!
