Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android phone has been much anticipated because it not only is it their first Android touchscreen phone debut, but features the custom “Rachel” interactive user interface featuring Timescape (a unified source to pool all your communication with a person; Contacts, email, Facebook , Twitter, etc.), fast 1GHz Snap Dragon processor and generous 8GB external SD Card included. However, I am a bit disappointed with the available internal storage memory for applcations (256MB comparable to the DROID and just above the T-Mobile G1) and said debut with Android operating system version 1.6 and not 2.0 or higher. So you know know all the details about the sony ericsson x10, so if this article has persuaded you to pick one up, head on over to phones4u.co.uk.

The x10 could be loaded with Android 2.1.0 from what Sony Ericsson has said. The final configuration is still unknown.
Thanks for the great Android site

when you say the new software will be loaded up, does this mean that people who already have the x10 now (1.6 version) will need to buy a whole new handset, or can they just simply update the software ?

Dude, SE hasn’t got enough time to adjust their UI Timescape and Mediascape to the newer Android versions. It will hit the stores with 1.6 and later users will receive updates to 2.0.. Haven’t heard anything about 2.1.0 for the X10.

    Multitasking (Which lacks in iPhone)

Sony Ericcson has officially announced tat it will upgrade the OS to 2.1 by September. SE X10 will not have multitouch support cos of Hardware Limitation.

i got the phone before a week. Damn! The phone rocks… The only prob i have is it drinks battery. I’m thinking of getting EP900 SE Accessory.

Android is surely going to over throw the iPhone within years.

cool phone, all options, unfortunatelly the flashlight is not a flash but only a ligthsource that can be switched on or off. This is due to 1.6 maybe with the next update it supports flash too. (if the hardware is up to it)

Hey I’ve had my x10 for about a month or so now and abosolutley love it, excpet for the batter light and lack of flash on the camera. I’ve been reading many articles and reviews about it mostly to do with the software being 1.6 and how SE say they will upgrade it to 2.0 or higher. I was just wondering and tell me if this is a stupid question, when they say they will upgrade it, does that mean i have to buy a whole new x10 with the new software on it. Or can I just update the software on my x10 i already have?

No, you will not have to buy a new phone. These updates are usually over the air, downloaded to your phone and ask you if you want to install. Some hackers often times get a version and make it possible to upgrade yourself. Search Google for Android ROMs for more.

Its depends on what you’re looking for when comparing the two. As far as hardware, and based on iPhone 4G rumors they should be almost the same, however the 4G is rumored to have 2 cameras (one in the front). And the X10 doesn’t have 2. iPhone’s naturally have more room for apps than Android plus more apps to download.

If you’re from Europe I cannot recommend the hottest Android to debut, the HTC Evo 4G, as it is a CDMA phone and you would require a GSM phone like X10 or iPhone.

What are more of the features or wants in your wishlist and we can better discuss/recommend?

I also have the same problem as “andy”. It first happened when i tried to call with the phone, but i only got a black screen, and then some error message… “com.android.phone”… or something wasn’t responding. I tried again, but i got the same problem, so i turned the phone off. When i tried to turn it on again, it loads to the Sony Ericsson logo – black – then i get: “process system is not responding.” I now have two options. To “wait” – but if you wait nothing ever happens. Which leaves me with the other alternative: “Force close”. When I “force close” the screen goes black, but the phone is still on (the background light in the screen and the light between the buttons are still on). When you try to turn it off or use any off the other buttons it restarts and I get the same error. The only way to completely turn it off is to remove the battery.
What should I do? please advise.

I am loving this Xperia X10. Loaded with 100s of good rated apps, which I am using on a daily basis. I am using extensively, and hence I am okay with battery standby upto 20 hours. If i do not use GPRS all the time, it comes more than 2 days.

My only concern is 5 screens in OS 2.1 and Java apps not supporting. My country’s major handy apps like Bank, AirTel carrier has Java based apps, and I am not able to install it. Will be lovely and kind if SE or Android gets this compatibility support by 2.1 update at least.

Another concern is it does not have secondary camera, and hence no video conferencing. Moreover, the camera is not so good like Nokia. A little move of object makes the snap blurred. And, the manual flashlight does not do any good work. Has poor lighting. But outdoor photos, are brilliant.

I face one strange thing in default Messaging app which comes with XPERIA X10. The ‘To’ field does not have selection button to take the numbers from Contacts. I have to manually type the number. This is really dumb.

This made me to download Handecent Messaging apps. This is really brilliant. I am loving it. One concern of this app is suddenly, it crashes (force close), and all my messages are lost. No way of recovering it.

No, you just need to write the first or first few letters of the addressee and the list will drop down accordingly. Similarly you can go on adding more addressees if its kinda group sms.

The answer is technically NO. Meaning, because the phone is currently running Android version 1.6, many developers create apps that start at version 2.0 and higher, therefore the X10 won’t be able to see these apps in the Android Market at all to download.

I think it is not a problem of your device! Some games are not “perfect” constructed or the internet connection was bad or blocked..

But if the software (game) which you r tring to download is without bugs, it will progress well.

I just got mine two weeks ago. It is my first smart phone. I got it just prior to making a big move from central ontario to the east coast of canada and need to rely on it alot.
For the first week with no internet set up it was all i had. Using piggy little fingers to punch and send emails was a pain but mostly due to the very poor keyboard it comes with.
I read the desire in reviews by htc is almost scary in how it will figure out what you meant to say and be eerily accurate.
This sony is the opposite and if you hit space unlike htc or even iphone it doesnt automatically fill in what makes sense, it will just insert your misspelled words.
    poor.
i love the look. i love the contacts section and its looks when someone calls and a photo i added fills screen. very cool.
but syncing my yahoo contacts did not work. trying to export to gmail did not work. read about many android models automatically pulling in your facebook contacts, yahoo, gmail etc.
not this phone. manual and only if you have gmail.

Re performance. poor shaky performance at best. I have had the phone lock up so many times i cannot count. sometimes its just a 3 second shudder. sometimes its much longer.
Sometimes i will type a msg and it will stutter or insert the letter i hit several times.
Sometimes using the camera it will do odd things. It will not allow me to leave the camera screen (happened 3 times). It will not let me punch into the other menus. Not always, but a few times including today where i wanted to turn off smile recognition and it would flicker and show the menu for a brief second but go back to main view. Tried five times and finally it worked on the sixth try.

Crashes. oh my, the crashes. hit icon to go into my email and initially no problems. but last week. i hit email and it will occasionally, no not always, but still occasionally, will crash.
what do i mean by crash? screen goes black, nothing, then sony ericcson shows on screen, then powering up my service company, then readying sd card and voila…back to being able to use the phone.
    i try email again…you got it…crash.
i try email again…it works..do other things, take a pic….use an app..then i go into maps, it shows my location works great and gives directions..but..and i repeat but…sometimes it shuts down and crashes…yet again.
    today?
    15 f’ng times!!!!!!
in a new city, in a new province (similar to US states) i am 2000 miles away from my familiar zone in a city i dont know, relying on this phone to use gps to get me places and i literally the other day got stuck half way cross a toll bridge and had to pull over not knowing where i was going.
a security person even came to my car thinking i was broken down.
    no. not me broken down.
    no. not my car.
sony? yep. let me down. the navigation in beta? dont even think about that…if maps doesnt reliably work..the navigation is a 1 out of 10 chance of not crashing.
I find the tiny fonts and little icons that the x10 uses are so small you accidentally hit the wrong things. if in contacts, the difference between someones home and cell is microscopic so often i have to hit back to correct.

moving and navigating around in the browser is a pain. I hate apple and iphones…to a certain degree as i am one of those that hates the big guy and yet i must admit…in a store..the browser is flawless on iphones.
iphones seem to understand when you want to scroll and when you want to click an url. accidents rarely happen.

on the sony? i am constantly trying various methods and pressures in an effort to scroll without accidentally hitting an url i didnt want to hit and taking me to a new page. with no button to stop it…you have to wait…then hit the back button…and start all over.

I am locked in now..stuck in a three year commitment with this piece of crap. I love the look and style and the camera when it works…emphasis on when it works..which is usually..but usually and always…is not the same thing…is nice, the video is nice.
the forthcoming update will surely help…a tiny bit…but then…without multi touch. so many mistaking in electronic stores claim that the one called 2.2 is coming..but uh…no. i am not a tech or geek..wish i was..but i know enough that we are still waiting just for 2.1. That multi touch though it may be capable…is not likely coming.
that this crap crashing is likely to continue. How many times should one have to back up their contacts and do a repair function on the sync software. is daily not too much?

overall…hate this phone. regret not getting a different provider. i wanted the plan and with my company this was the only current android..but should have taken the inferior plan…with the superior phone…which from reviews is the desire by htc.
sure…so many keep saying..oh wait…blank is coming out…well of course there are always new models on the brink of coming out..but you cannot wait forever you must jump in.
    and i did…into a swamp.
sony…you let me down big time. i daily reach points of frustration where i want to take a big fat juicy hammer…ok…hammers cannot be juicy…but you get my drift…and smash this f’ng thing into bits.

    sigh…………………….

I’ve had the X10 for a few months now, my main concern was that the battery didn’t last very long so I instantly bought an in-car charger.

However, after reading through a few forums I found that by turning the wireless off, the battery is now lasting 3-4 days between charges. I can easily cope with this and if I ever forget to charge it at home, I just plug it into the car charger, no differrent to previous phones really. I love it, just wish there was a stopwatch – I suppose there’s an app for one.

Unfortunately the Android Market is not in India yet. Hopefully Google will be opening it up to your country soon.

Serious love/hate going on since i bought it. I won’t go over the cool parts casue everyone pretty much got the major points. but getting help from ericson themselves takes an act of god, not to mention i still can’t find a contact number for customer service for them that works. Tried hooking it up to my new Scion to play it with absolutely no luck unless i just use the speakers and keep messing with the phone and crash instead of watching the road. Wife plugged in her Iphone and it integrated perfectly and all set, already contacted att and hit brick wall there for app or any answeres, big surprise, and unless i hear a tip that integrates it with my touchscreen radio instead of some stupid trick like “put a wired cassete in the cassete player and play your cd’s that way” kinda stupid, i’ll be dropping droid and att fast and blasting them on my website as well as a few others for good times, lol. Last time i checked i don’t need another degree from college just to get a cell phone to work right due to crappy or non existent support.

Honest to God this is the WORST PHONE I have ever had!!! Messages just
Delete on there own. Trying to get on the internet 5 times out of 10 you have to restart the phone…when you are talking on the phone…if you happen to touch the phone to your cheak while talking it presses againt the off buttom and you have to redial. I really could go on and on about this phone…I really do not want to buy an apple product…but I have used the I Phone 4 a few times…I’m telling you it is a FAR BETTER PHONE. It’s of course up to you…but I WOULD NEVER EVER BY a SONY PHONE AGAIN!!!!!
