Solar: Weather – a beautifully minimalistic weather application

Solar: Weather is a beautifully minimalistic weather application. It’s simple to use, intuitive, accurate and customisable. You explore upcoming weather by sliding your finger over the main screen of the app, allowing you to get an accurate forecast in detail. If your existing weather app lacks good looks and you like trying new things, this is one your should try.
Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Looks stunning!
- Easy to use!
Solar is a gorgeous new weather app that has won huge acclaim on iOS and so has made it’s way to the Android platform. Much like the iPhone, the app looks beautiful, although lacks functionality that some users might rely on. There’s no widget to speak of, no alerts, no charts, no customisation and forecasts are limited to 3 days only.
However, if you like your weather apps simple and great-looking, Solar: Weather really excels. What I liked most was the way in which, when you drag your finger upwards, time speeds up and shows you upcoming weather for the rest of the day. If you swipe downwards, a three day forecast for your location is displayed. Swipe right and you can add locations to track the weather of, even having multiple locations to follow and view forecasts of.
While Solar: Weather is not stacked with functionality, it looks great and is highly intuitive to use.
The colour of the main weather screen changes with the weather, so if it’s sunny it’ll be brighter, if it’s dull weather, the colour will be reflected. The app is therefore a very tactile and visual experience to use, instead of flooding you with statistics and the kind of charts used by deep-sea fishermen.
There is limited customisation. While your main view shows time, date, weather description, location and temperature you can also adjust it to show the ‘feels like’ temperature, vibrate, alter temperature measuring units, display station ID and there’s additionally the ability to share the app. It’s all very minimalist, intuitive and, while it lacks much functionality, it’s perhaps ideal for people who want to keep things simple.
Much like the iPhone, the app looks beautiful, although lacks functionality that some Android users might rely on.
It would nice to perhaps include a few more options, should the developers want to increase functionality; a widget would be great, as would a longer forecast period. Additionally, there doesn’t seem to be a way to set the default location as it tends to just start on the last location you entered, which isn’t always useful.
All that aside, it’s a stunning app that includes some genuinely innovative controls, it’s fun to use and looks amazing. It’s completely free to download and contains no ads- definitely check it out.
