Tested on: Samsung Galaxy S3, Nexus 7
Content Rating: Everyone
Pros & Cons:
Pros
- Configure an interactive solar background for your Android phone or tablet background!
Cons
- My theory that it is additional battery drain and causes the device to get warmer.
- Swipe to move camera does not work on Samsung Galaxy S3.
Features:
If you’re into using live wallpapers to personalize your Android’s background with animation and interactive elements, then Solar Power might be for you. Essentially you have control of your own Sun in 3D, which you can set the color (or have random colors gradually change), increase or decrease light intensity, adjust asteroid & star field visibility, set it to more violent solar explosions or keep it calm, get interactive with it by allowing touch to spark solar flares, and change the camera view every time you swipe between homescreens (unfortunately this feature did not work on the Samsung Galaxy S3, hopefully the bug is corrected soon, but works fine on the Nexus 7).
This is my own theory, yet unproven by fact, but I believe this app causes faster battery drain (shaving a few hours off my day) and causes the device to get and remain warmer than usual. Upon installing and testing this app over the past few days these are the areas in which I have been affected. Though when I look up what has been the main factors for drainage in the Power settings, it simply lists “Display”. Moreover, I personally tend not to use live wallpaper apps due to power drain concerns as they have to run constantly in the background.
This aside the visuals look stunning. On the Galaxy S3, the app & widget drawers are semi-transparent so the Solar background is visible and interactive there. It’s a mysteriously pleasant greeting as you press the Power/Wake button to lock your device.
Despite my caution, if you desire to have cool live wallpaper apps, here’s how to configure them on most Android devices…
Android Advice™ & Help: Setting Live Wallpapers:
- Long-press (hold for 2 or more seconds) anywhere on an empty space on the homescreen.
- Choose “Live Wallpaper”.
- Choose the wallpaper of choice.
- (If applicable) configure the wallpaper settings and preview your results.
- Tap “Set Wallpaper”.
