Snap Camera is a camera app with a minimalist interface reducing the clutter with quick buttons to take instant pictures and record videos. Based on the gesture controls of the latest version of Android, a slick gallery, it packs simple photo filters like Instagram, plus you delve into advanced photo editing features.
Price: Free Trial, $1.99
Tested on: Samsung Galaxy S3, Sprint Flash, Nexus 7, Nexus One
Content Rating: Everyone
Pros & Cons:
Pros
- Gives the advanced camera technology of the latest Google Nexus phones!
- Lightning fast photo snaps!
- Simple interface does away with tons of icons on the camera interface… just buttons for camera, video and settings!
- Use hold or swipe gestures on the preview screen to reveal features.
- Includes a camera app and gallery app with filters, borders and advanced editing features!
Cons
- According to Google Play comments, some users experience issues with the app not working in various areas, I didn’t experience these issues.
- Preview issues on one phone, experienced a green flicker in the colors on the preview however this was not present in the photos.
Features:
If you have a Nexus device (4, 7, 10, Galaxy Nexus) or running a pure Android 4.2 Jelly Bean ROM, you’ll notice Snap Camera has the core camera features plus more. It does away with all the buttons and icons you get on other camera interfaces (i.e. Samsung’s TouchWiz) for a streamlined interface that has buttons for camera, video and settings. The camera shines in the fact that you can take instant photos with no lag or focus delays. Additionally, the app bundles a gallery app that offer a full photo editing suite.
The Camera App

Snap Camera Floating Menu Settings
Whether you tap the circle button in the top left corner or simply hold anywhere on the screen you’ll be presented with this floating menu, which reveals more sub-menus should you desire to make settings changes. You can tap to focus, pinch to zoom, swipe to review images & video, and long-press to access settings. Note some features listed below are dependent on the hardware and software features of your device (clockwise order):
- Camera Sharpness
- Flash settings
- White Balance
- Additional Settings
- Exposure settings
- Photo Editor (see The Gallery App section below)
- Shooting Types: Multi-shot, Mute Shutter Sound, Switch Cameras, Photo Sphere, Panorama, Timer
I tested on various non-Nexus devices to see how it fares and I like that it can take an old Droid like the Nexus One and upgrade it with some Nexus newness. Even the Nexus 7, which doesn’t have a rear-facing camera and no simple access to the Camera app- Snap Camera offers a workaround to launch the camera on the Nexus 7.
The Gallery App

Snap Camera Filmstrip View
Snap Camera also includes a gallery app with filters, borders and advanced photo editing features! You can access this in one of three ways: from the camera app just simply swipe left to reveal the fancy Filmstrip (swipe up to delete a pic, swipe right to jump back to the camera), from the floating menu tap trio of circles in pyramid or from the launch open the “Snap” app.

Snap Camera Curves Advanced Photo Editing
It features a rich photo editor that is as simple as selecting predefined filters and borders like Instagram or you can dive deeper into the advanced features for more control and creativity. These include: Straighten, Crop, Rotate, Mirror, Auto-color, Exposure, Vignette, Contrast, Shadows, Sharpness, Curves (my fav), Hue, Saturation, Black & White filter. Furthermore it has a History feature like in PhotoShop to see what effects have been applied to remove if necessary or reset.

Usefulness:
Snap Camera is one of the best camera and photo gallery app combos I’ve seen in a while. If you’re looking for snazzy simplicity or extra photo editing features all in one app then give it a try.
Ease of Use:
The interface allows for the app to be super easy and uncluttered with dedicated camera/video buttons, or it can get a bit involved with the screen press gestures. I personally like to use the settings button rather than long pressing the screen as some sub-menus can vere out of view or your finger just gets in the way. There have been some users complaining of the app not functioning well for them. I only experienced the green flickering glitch on the Sprint Flash, otherwise it worked flawlessly across several devices.
Here’s a help guide from the developer in the case your video fails to record.
Frequently Used:
This app has the chops to replace your current camera and gallery app.
Interface:
The minimalist camera interface and gesture controls make it a joy to use.
