Smart Volume Profile Manager is a profile-creation tool that lets you manage smarter profiles based on your Wi-Fi connection. While there are various apps in the market that already do this, most notably PhoneWeaver, many custom phone ROMs also do more or less the same thing.
Price: $1.99
Tested on: HTC Desire HD
Content Rating: Everyone
Pros & Cons:
Pros
- Simple to use.
- Triggers by Wi-Fi Connection.
Cons
- Very basic UI.
- Not as fully-featured as similar apps.
- Depending on your use, your phone might already do this.
Features:
If your phone has ever rang during a meeting, or woken you up in the middle of the night, you’ll probably appreciate the functionality of profile apps. These allow you to set specific times so that, for example, at night time your phone won’t ring and wake you up. You can set them to vibrate or silent during working hours too, so your phone will not go off during an important meeting. These are very much a lifestyle app and you’ll use these as little or as much as your life demands.
Smart Volume Profile Manager adds a useful element to this function. Instead of just setting times, you can allow the Wi-Fi network you are on trigger set profiles. Therefore, if you usually attach your phone to your work’s Wi-Fi, you can ensure your mobile phone doesn’t go off when you’re in the office- perhaps setting it to vibrate instead. You can also set times you want certain profiles to operate and the layout and creation of profiles is markedly simple and easy to set up.
If you have a custom ROM, such as Cyanogenmod you will have some of this functionality already. On this ROM, and quite a few others- for example HTC’s Sense also offers the same thing- you can create profiles based on the times you want the phone to be silent. Other apps go further, and present a series of different triggers based on location, Wi-Fi and time. AndroidTapp reviewed PhoneWeaver quite recently and this provides far more in the way of functionality.
Smart Volume Profile Manager is a fine app, and it works well, but I’d have to advise users to think about how they might currently use profile apps to determine if this is suitable for them. If the Wi-Fi trigger is the only essential feature you need then you might want to consider an app like this. However, apps like PhoneWeaver provide far more control- for example the ability to change Wi-Fi state, volume, Bluetooth, even wallpaper based on various triggers including time and location. Smart Volume Profile Manager on the other hand will only alter volume settings based on Wi-Fi connection. It’s an app that works well, but there is better out there, and you might already have the functionality you need on your phone.

Usefulness:
The app is hugely useful if you occasionally have your phone go off at inappropriate times. It means your phone will not ring perhaps when you are at work or in classes. However, your phone might do this already, so definitely check this out first before you think about buying an app to do the same job.
Ease of Use:
The app is very easy to set up and this is a real strong point. You also get a small notification in your status panel telling you a profile is running.
Frequently Used:
If you lead the kind of life where multiple profiles are required, this is the kind of app you should have running all the time in the background.
Interface:
The interface is pretty basic, no-frills settings. Obviously it not a particular visual app, so this isn’t a real issue, but the UI is very simplistic- even compared to similar applications.
