SlideME Android Community and Application Marketplace. Enabling developers to monetize their efforts.

Price: Free

AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • You don’t need an Android phone with carrier subscription to download Android Apps
  • Alternative method for finding apps

Cons

  • Smaller percentage of available apps

Features:

SlideME Android App is a utility to offer Android Developers an alternative to Google’s Official Android Market. Both free and paid apps can be found there. The resource is great for finding those apps either not listed or not permitted in the Android Market. The SAM app offers slight improvements over the official Market such as numerous screenshots versus 2, longer description field versus 325 charcters and can associate YouTube videos.

It works 2 ways:

  1. you can download their marketplace app SAM onto your Android phone, then download free apps and install with ease (for paid apps you must signup for a Mobentoo account to associate one of many payment options available).
  2. Free app versions can be downloaded to your computer so you can drag and drop them to your Android phone via USB.

This concept is great for developers and consumers alike as often times you just can’t find apps in the “Search Kings” catalog (how ironic)! We receive a ton of email daily that people just can’t find some apps.

Usefulness:

SlideME Android App is for those interested in finding Android apps that may not be listed in Google’s Android Market. However more beneficial to developers to increase their software exposure.

Ease of Use:

Very similar to using the official Android Market yet there’s a desktop presence and a few more features.

Frequently Used:

User dependent, most likely sparingly to common use.

Interface:

The user interface is slick and optimized for mobile.

I am disappointed in SlideMe app store, there are almost no free apps. Speed Forge 3D is free on Android Market but paid on SlideMe. WTF?!

    • ari-free says:

anyone can get all the free apps from android market. The problem is that not every country can get paid apps and slideme tries to solve that problem.

  2. Pander says:

I heard that SlideMe is delaying payments to developers.

If I find the link I’ll post it.

  3. @Aleksey: I suspect SlideME might have more paid applications simply because most developers don’t need alternatives to distribute free apps. If they can’t use Android Market for whatever reason, there are plenty of places they can stick a free .apk download, including having a download link on their app home page. So developers who cannot use Android Market to list paid apps, or can’t deal with complex sales tax/VAT issues Android Market leaves them to deal with themselves, prefer SlideME.

  4. Hello!

I would like to share my experience on this topic, please.

We develop an application, investing hundreds of night-hours on it. Then, if we wish to sell it, Google does not allow us to sell in the market. “Canadian vendors not allowed in the market”.
Ironically, they did take our 25 US dollars for the privilege of giving our free apps to the users, but no way to sell.
So we put a LITE app in the market, and a paid app in Slide ME. The users see the LITE, free app in the market and ask for more and more features, for free. Nobody buys the paid app.

This can go on for a while, but how long will it be until the good developers burn out and stop developing?

In the iPhone store, the good apps are making nice money out of it (the best 5 apps make roughly 3000-4000 US$ a day). In the Android market, the absolutely best 5 sold apps (not mine, unfortunately) are making around 30-60 dollars a day.

Free apps are nice, but they don’t put food on my kids table, right?

    Best regards,

    Ari

  5. While SlideMe might seem like a good alternative to the Google Market in countries where paid applications are not available, developers beware. You are dealing with a third party that is interested in making money just as much as you are. Payments will be delayed and their priority is most certainly not with your game or app.

An alternative to consider (and I would welcome some commentary) is the in-game billing services that are coming available now. Two that come to mind are MyWaves (www.mywaves-inc.com) and Bango (www.bango.com).

MyWaves embeds some code in your free, limited app that presents a splash screen where users can download the full, paid version from the Android market or download that same full version from their network for free (in exchange for participating in some simple advertising promo…like joining a social network for free).

Bango is more of a classic in-game purchasing function that i am not currently clear whether Google sanctions for use in Android Market games. Still studying this solution, so I don’t have a lot to add yet on this.

  6. I’d love some feedback from people who have researched or are using Bango in their apps. Thanks!

I actually like SlideME but it’s not a secret that they still need some work to become better. After reviewing over 15 Android marketplaces, the top place is a site called RawApps.

For those of us that are not completly phone/computer savy, how do I download this for my iphone???

  9. Ohloki says:

Slideme does NOT review, warrant, or require ANY submitted application!!!

Slideme is NO better than google: another haven for malware masquerading as freeware

    Adware IS malware

    Slideme anti piracy is DELUSIONAL

I prefer http://F-droid.org and other FOSDEM minded developers

  10. Momo says:

I was Very Happy With This Market. I Purchase a android tablet and it did not include the android app market.! I was upset until i found Out About SlideMeMarket:) Its esy to download And Works Greaat:) Of course I much rather have the original app market but this SlideMe works perfectly!

  11. Lars says:

The user interface sucks! I have to type my username and password all the time. Everything is painfully slow. When upgrading my one SlideMe app, I have to go through all upgrades, so if there’s been some time since last time, I have to suffer through the upgrade process several times. The StorageLocker doesn’t show my app. Selecting “Update” doesn’t give any result either, I have to search for the app I want to upgrade every f***ing time. And, to add insult to injury, SlideMe crashes randomly. Avoid!
