Six Guns – a must play a gun-slinging action adventure!
Nov 23, 2012 8:49 AM –
Six Guns is a gorgeous freemium game from Gameloft. You complete various missions as gunslinger Buck Crosshaw (ever a cowboy name if there was one) in stunning 3D third-person action. The game features a large free-to-explore environment and gameplay much like Grand Theft Auto, only in some wild-west nowheresville instead of an urban sprawl. With a nice variety of missions, great sound and those eye-popping visuals, it’s not a bad freebie!
Price: Free, plus In-app Purchases
Tested on: HTC One X
Pros & Cons:
- Awesome graphics!
- Immersive sound!
- Nice variety of missions!
- The game is geared so you’re going to need some in-app purchases to progress with any real conviction. That said, there’s plenty to do for free.
Six Guns dumps you in the searing desert heat, outside some run-down wild west town. You’re Buck Crosshaw and you’ve just faked your own death. As a man who seems to have trouble follow him everywhere it is not long before he gets drawn into an ancient and mysterious adventure. You progress through the game by completing various missions which you pick up on the in-game map. It reminded me very much of the Grand Theft Auto series in terms of gaming framework- with the ability to freely roam the environment.
The missions themselves offer a nice variety. There are horse racing missions, ones where you have to explore or defend areas from baddies and so on. This means gameplay always feels quite fresh and there is always a different challenge awaiting you. The graphics are very impressive, certainly some of the best we’ve seen on the Android platform. In-game you build up a range of items; cash, stars, health and XP. All of these can be boosted via in-app purchases, as can your weapons, clothes and equipment. Missions do get harder and you are inclined to upgrade things to be able to progress properly, but despite not making any in-app purchases myself I’ve been able to complete quite a few missions without problem.
Six Guns is a good example of a freemium game in that it lets you play and doesn’t immediately require in-app purchases to play the game. While this is admirable, I still kinda wish such games would have the option to buy a paid-for version and have things a little easier as you play. Six Guns is a graphically rich and interesting game that has the potential to be awesome, but as it hides behind this wall of monetisation it might not win the accolades of similar titles. That said I think it’s a brilliant game- very playable, immersive and it’s lots of fun to complete the different missions.

Yes, if you like the idea of playing a GTA-style games set in the wild west, definitely check this out. It is great how gameplay is mixed up with missions offering diverse experiences- rather than something that feels repetitive.
Missions are small and incremental so it’s easy to become absorbed by the game. There’s always the option of exploring the area and discovering new things, so it’s a fun game to get lost in.
The graphics are fantastic and very detailed. The game is set in some Arizona backwater and I found the colours quite bleached in the sun (to the point I couldn’t tell if they lacked a richer palette or just replicated the sun-drenched appearance to perfection!). Either way, it looks good and images are crisp and detailed; whether you’re roaming tombs and shooting ghosts- to racing around the desert on a horse, the visuals are superb.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
The sound is very good although I think a little more could have been made of the sound effects. Perhaps I just imagine Arizona circa the 19th century to be a little less sterile than it was…
