SimpleRockets – play space rocket simulator: build, blast-off, orbit & land ships
Oct 7, 2013 10:30 AM –
SimpleRockets is fun little amateur rocketry simulator that sees you building your own shuttles and blasting them into the stratosphere… well that or creating a scorching fireball that crashes to Earth. It’s part action game but there’s a distinct puzzle element as you blast off, gain the right height and endeavor to create an orbit. If you’re an inner-rocket geek or just like engineering simulators, this is a physics game you have to try!
Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Nice graphics!
- Impressive physics!
- Loads of challenges to work through!
- Explore the galaxy with space rockets you build and fly yourself!
- Sandbox missions!
- Steep learning curve, requires patience.
SimpleRockets allows you to build and fly simple space rockets. You can create your own craft from the ground up, learn to blast off, separate your shuttle configuration and land on other planets. There’s a lot of science and physics involved, which is great for accuracy and while it’s not a walk in the park to play, with a little dedication and patience, it can be incredibly rewarding.
As you begin, you are required to work through several tutorials which guide you through creating a rocket, blasting off, landing and maintaining orbit. Some of this can be quite tricky, but if you’re a bit of a space-geek, you’ll love it. I did find the tutorials a little arduous, but perhaps only because I was expecting to be thrown right into the action. I think due to the games’ accuracy in creating a rocket simulator, it’s not a game where you get instant gratification. Rather, with patience, some practice and fun experimentation that sometimes ends in an, albeit glorious, disaster you eventually get your reward.
Landing, for example, took me about 5 attempts. You have to get your descent and angle just right, in addition to lowering your landing gear at the right time and ensuring you land somewhere safe. There are plenty of things that can (and do) go wrong, but thrilling when you get it right. Because of all this, SimpleRockets is certainly not a casual game you can pick up and play in 5 minute bursts. It requires much more dedication but for fans of this kind of game, it will likewise give you great satisfaction!
Once through with the tutorials and early missions, you can really blast off and explore the solar system! The game gives you a massive sense of achievement being able to construct your own rocket, blast off, orbit, find a planet and land on it. It’s obviously not going to be for everyone and there’s no aliens to shoot at, but for the amateur rocket-nerd, this is a game you must try.

The game will frustrate you from the beginning but if you put the time in and learn the ropes, it’s definitely all worth it. While the rocket parts you can access and use are not infinite, it offers more than enough to keep you playing and trying new things.
Providing you have time to commit to it, the game is stacks of fun and certainly something you’ll play over and over. However, there’s no quick fix; don’t expect to load the game up and be flying through space within a few minutes. Just remember, good things come to those who wait!
The graphics are really nice, and while relatively simple, work well with the simulation.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
There are plenty of ‘realistic’ rocket sounds. It’s very basic though. Hey, stop complaining, there’s no vacuum for sound to exist in space anyway!
