ShopSavvy Install

ShopSavvy is your shopping assistant. Using the camera in your phone, you can scan the barcode of any product to find the best prices on the Internet and at nearby, local stores.

Price: Free

AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

ShopSavvy, formerly GoCart, is an Android App for comparing prices of products by scanning bar codes using the phones camera.

Features:

Although you can use the devices’ camera to scan UPC bar codes, alternately you can use the keypad or title to search for the product. It features Wish Lists, Price Alerts and saves your search History all of which can be very useful. Wish Lists are pretty self explanatory, but you can apply your scanned/searched items. Wish Lists can be expanded further by applying Price Alerts, which you can set to alert you when ShopSavvy find that product when it hits a certain price via email.

Read our Interview with ShopSavvy creator Alex Muse, he talks about their next major feature enhancement for “Buy It Now” mobile purchases.

Usefulness:

ShopSavvy is a very useful app when you’re out and shopping. For example, I was in TigerDirect shopping for computer supplies in a rush. I was going to grab a Printable 50-pack blank CD-R spindle for $19.99 (then thought about it… that’s $0.38 a disk!!!) CDs are dirty cheap these days, so why not see if I can get it cheaper?!?! Whipped out my T-Mobile G1 and scanned the product bar code. 12 Web results came back with the lowest price of $5.69 (needed it right away so I couldn’t wait) and 6 Local results with the lowest being $7.99 at BestBuy half a mile away. The app even showed me options to call the store to see if it’s available or view the location on the map. Most people are impulse buyers and in these situation I would normally just grab the spindle available, but the ShopSavvy app allowed me to get real-time comparative prices thus saving me over 60%.

Ease of Use:

Taking advantage of the touchscreen; every feature is a Tapp, menu function, or back button away. Although a limitation of the device camera launching speed, when you first Tapp “Search for a product”, there is a second or two latency. Other than that, it is pretty intuitive to navigate and use.

Frequently Used:

If you’re a shopper, especially a bargain shopper, then this App gets frequent use! It can even be used for the cool factor amongst your friends.

Interface:

One thing I noticed was the menus swipe left/right when navigating. The backgrounds, icons and optimization spacing for touch screens are well thought out.

NeoMedia Technologies grandfathered this technology back in the mid 90′s and have been doing mobile code scanning and comparison shopping via UPC codes long before any other company in this space.

NeoMedia has a rich patent portfolio that covers scanning barcodes with a camera enabled mobile device to connect to the Internet, comparison shop, and/or retrieve online content.

Very poor app for android. Cannot add stores. Search “western digital 120 gb hard drive” best price online $59.99, actual best price online $19.99. A $40 dollar difference. Please think twice!!! -schuess

I’m really bummed right now. I got my G1 for Christmas today and it won’t turn on or charge. I have it plugged in and no lights appear. I called TMobile and they are off today for Christmas. Worst part, is it was bought thru Tmobile.com so I will probably have to wait longer for them to send me another phone. If anyone has a solution please email me at jtsparks0@gmail.com. I would really appreciate it. Hope everyone had a merry christmas!

Hmmm… streetsylz seems to troll the interwebs looking for ShopSavvy posts to comment on… OK, but where’s your Android app?

Of the three barcode aware Android apps I know of, ShopSavvy is the leader – I love using the history function.

This is a fun app to have. One of those amaze your friends type of apps. I get some odd looks when I scan in WalMart and other big name stores. But it has helped me compare prices so I can make a better choice and save some bucks.

The first day I had it, I scanned the house. It’s very useful.

I’m going back to this as I found items locally, something the OTHER app is not allowing me to do.
