AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Earn points that can be redeemed for gift cards
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Getting credit for walking into locations is buggy at best
  • The number of points it takes to trade in for the most desirable items will take a long time to accumulate

Shopkick is an application that allows you to “check in” with various stores based on your location. You earn what are called kickbucks for checking in with certain locations, and featured stores that the developers have partnered with will also allow you to get additional kickbucks for walking into their locations. The incentive for earning these points is that they can be traded in for gift certificates to a variety of retailers.

Features:

Shopkick is a fun way to see what types of stores are around your immediate area, and earn points toward things like Best Buy gift cards, or even a Princess Cruise. The more check-ins you participate in over time, the more points you’ll be eligible to earn daily, and the developers are constantly looking to add new partner locations. Right now, their partners include Simon Malls, Target, Best Buy, Sports Authority, Wet Seal, American Eagle Outfitters, Crate&Barrel and Macy’s, and they are constantly looking to add more.

However, only a few urban areas will currently give credit for walk-ins, as it actually requires the store to install a device that emits a signal the app can pick up to prove you walked inside. This is the only real drawback, as it means the majority of users will only be eligible to earn the daily check-in points. The process is also hit or miss – I personally have only had it work once in a Target when I stood in a certain department not anywhere near the front door where the app said I should stand. So the walk-in points are something it needs to work on. :(

Rewards:

The rewards for using the app are pretty big, but the caveat is that it will take a while to earn them. Some, such as donating to one of several charitable causes or Facebook credits, don’t require a large amount of kickbucks. A $5 Target gift card will cost 1250 kickbuck, however, a Sony Bravia 55-inch 3D LCD television is 925,000 kickbucks, and an “Around the World” Princess Cruise will cost 6,250,000 kickbucks. At 10-20 kickbucks a day without walk-ins, the better rewards will take some time to accumulate. You can get additional kickbucks scanning items in all locations, which will help if you decide to save up for a bigger-ticket item.

Usefulness:

Only slight… It’s not a useful app so much as it is an entertaining one. The special badge hunts for holidays and earning rewards for “checking in” is a fun way to interact with stores in your area. Fantastic for retailers, brands and marketers.

Ease of Use:

Very easy – Just start the app and touch each place you want to log in!

Frequently Used:

Intended for every day… you can check in to each place once a day for kickbucks!

What proof do we have that its an employee or acting member of the company that develops ShopKick? It seems like speculation to me. I want to see hard evidence. These types of comments are no worse than those advertising their code for games like World War.

The Shopick devs aren’t the ones posting the spam, the users are. Granted, by offering referral codes you could argue that they created the culture, but at the same time, they specifically state in the app, where you get the code, that it’s to share with friends. At no point do they even imply that you should go spam the market with it. If you were to hold every developer responsible for every spam comment their users post, my guess would be that the majority of the apps in the market would be in some sort of trouble. I agree with Jason, that until I see hard evidence from someone, I’ll just assume this is over-zealous users trying to abuse a feature, not a company trying to spam the competition out of business.
