AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Features:

Sherpa Android App is backed by T-Mobile for a reason… it’s good and useful. Geodelic developed a nifty location-based app that brings the nearest eateries, businesses, attraction, etc. to you… and does it with style. Spin the virtual carousel of attractions, view them on Google maps (with aerial view of buildings),or view them in a list.

This fancy feature set was optimized for the T-Mobile myTouch 3G, which has a slight memory bump. Using Sherpa on a G1 can have some performance issue if memory on your phone is low.

On theĀ AndroidGuys.com podcast, Geodelic CEO Rahul Sonnad talked about “adaptive learning” within the app exclusive to T-Mobile which “learns” your attraction/geo location patterns the more you use it. Therefore showing you attractions in your surroundings you would be most interested in.

Ease of Use:

The app is easy to use, it brings entities nearest your location. It gets simpler as the app adapts to you.

Frequently Used:

Could quite possibly be used often, yet frequency is user dependent.

Interface:

As mentioned, the user interface features a slick carousel Open GL enriched, and optimized for mobile use.

  1. Phil says:

App is not up to date, there are places that have been gone for two years that still show up, and local places that have been around for over a year that do not show up. Google places does not look as good, but is more accurate

  2. ErinK says:

I’m wondering where Sherpa gets the catalog of businesses? I was trying it out standing across the street from a popular, 100-year-old Italian grocery and it didn’t show up on the Sherpa search. Some independent businesses did show up. Is the database based on who bought a listing?

Wish we could add our own locations.

Otherwise, it seems like a really good app.

  3. Mike says:

This is not in the Android Market. I have tried searching with no luck. Even went to Androlib.com and found it there and followed the barcode with no luck. Market keeps coming back that the app can not be found.

  4. Will says:

Does not show in the marketplace. This problem also occurs when searching for the Layar Augmented Reality Browser

    • Android Tapp says:

If on computer try scanning the QR Code on your monitor with Bar Code Scanner for direct link in the Market. Or try browsing this page from your phone and tapp the QR Code for direct link in the Market.

Also, are you on a DROID?

      • Oski says:

What does being on a DROID have to do with it?

        • Android Tapp says:

At the time of this reply, DROID is the only retailed and released phone with Android OS version 2.0, all others phones and carriers support 1.6 and lower. Google didn’t release version 2.0 until 10/27/09 and developers have to scramble to learn what’s changed and update their apps. The sad part about this is most devs don’t know their app is not compatible until they start getting negative reviews.

I would encourage emailing the deveoplers (which you can find their email addy on the page in the Market) to let them know your problem. A majority of them will take the time to work with you to prepare a fix.

This is another app I find many reviews on, but am unable to find it in the Android Market from my Motorola Droid phone. Has it been taken off line?

    • Android Tapp says:

Mistakenly we listed it but it’s exclusive to T-Mobile. However the creators of this app will be release a Mon carrier specific version soon.

      • ErinK says:

Hmm, I have it on Sprint. Might have been preinstalled, I don’t remember if I downloaded it or not. At any rate, maybe it is exclusive to some networks or phones.

I really like Google Places Directory better, though, because of the dataset issue I mentioned in my previous comment. Places works best when you search versus browsing the categories.
