ShapeWriter Keyboard for Android is an alternate way of typing on a virtual keyboard by simply sliding your finger to letters to create words. It’s meant to be fast and easy, however does takes some getting used to. At times it’s cumbersome to type words… make a mistake and tap the backspace button and it removes the whole word. Also hindering when you’re sliding to letters on the upper row then need letters on the lower row, however you can’t see them because your thumb is in the way sliding around. It’s also a pain to try to send SMS text message or Tweet with ShapeWriter.

If you can master it, the speed advantage offered makes it very useful.
I personally found the learning curve and slower speed at which I ended up typing frustrating enough to uninstall the app and stick to the default Android keyboard.
Android keyboards give options on which you prefer to use, or you can set ShapeWriter as your default keyboard.

nice, downloading now, I am hoping it is better than swype. I love swype but there are some things I find really annoying about it.
@schwiz and how does it compare to swype?
I like shapewriter better, swype has better prediction but shapewriter has a much less intrusive interface and nifty gestures to do things like cut and paste.
Droid gives me a warning that apps like this may read every keystroke for personal information including account numbers, etc.
Too risky for me to use.
Any softkeyboard you install will give that warning, however as you can see in the permissions shapewriter doesn’t have internet permissions so there really isn’t anything to worry about.
i havent heard that before. anyone else know if shapewriter/swype-type apps open the door for additional security issues? do they have the option to ‘wipe’ recent keystrokes?
They don’t record the keystrokes, every input device gives this warning when you activate them, better keyboard, swype, shaprewriter, etc Even iserty which doesn’t even have a keyboard but allows you to insert your location etc into a text field. The only time you should be concerned is if the app has the internet permission for no apparent reason.
These keyboard, albeit ingenuous, still have the problem of small keys. Each key is too small to be targeted by a finger on a cell phone.
A solution I like better is MessagEase, which has much, much larger keys, much simpler algorithm, and works in any language.
I have been using as my default keyboard on Hero (works fine on 1.5) and love it. Does take some getting used to but when you do much better and quicker than tapping!
I tried the barcode on this site to download it but it says there are no matches.
