ScareTimer – Scare Prank. Startle friends & record the gag with this app [insert evil laughter]
Mar 25, 2013 11:24 AM –
ScareTimer is an amusing app for people that enjoy practical jokes. It essentially allows you to set a delayed response video of a screaming ghoul. You then pass it to a buddy, let them do something on your device; play a game, use an app, read an email, etc. and then boom!, watch their response when the scare video kicks in. The app is easy to use and set up and will even shoot video via your front facing camera of the victims reaction!
Price: Free or $0.99 for the Pro version
Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Great design, with some very scary videos/sounds!
- Easy to set up!
- Takes front facing video that you can then share!
- Multiple delay options!
- App force closes when you first go to play your video.
- Be careful! If your device is expensive, the victim might drop it in fright!
- No clear method to upgrade to the Pro version (you have to select a Pro video, try to use it and only then can you upgrade).
Here in the UK and other countries around the world, April the 1st is known as April Fool’s Day – a day of pranks, hoaxes and jokes. What better solution than an app that’ll scare the hell out of your friends!? ScareTimer is a neat little app with a very simple trick. Here’s how it works:
- Open the app and choose ‘Start Scaring your friends’
- Select a scare video
- Set suitable video delay
- Click ‘Start’
- Pass to friend
- Wait for their reaction!
The videos are loud, nicely animated and pretty scary- especially if you’re not expecting it. The app is at some persuasion to get you to read their Terms of Service. Basically, you use the app at your own risk and can’t go running to the developer is someone has a heart attack or drops and breaks your Android device. That aside, it’s a brilliantly fun app to play with if you like pranking your friends or family.
While not mandatory, you can record their reaction using your front facing camera. Once recorded, you can share the video or upload it to the ScareTimer service. I did find that when you first try watching the video the app crashes, but the video is still stored and can be played back from the Saved Videos section.

Other than getting one over on your friends, the app doesn’t have many uses, but as it allows the opportunity to video their reaction, it’s pretty cool. The delay can be set for up to 5 minutes- hopefully enough time to lull even your most suspicious buddies in a false sense of security.
Ease of Use:
The app’s menu systems and options are extremely easy to set up, check out the numbered list above- it really is that simple.
OK, so maybe the app only has so many uses- depending on the number of friends you have and the number of times you want to prank them. But maybe it’s a good one to use again when they’ve forgotten about it. There are 10 different videos to use (2 with the free version, 8 more with the Pro version of the app).
The interface is heavily ‘horror’ themed and it works really well. Lots of detail and the 3D animated videos are excellent.
