Save Toshi is a compelling yet utterly bizarre 3D game where you have to manoeuvre popstar Toshi to a dance floor. Conceptually similar in many ways to the recently reviewed A Monster Ate My Homework, Save Toshi is lots of fun, with superb graphics and comes with plenty of quirky humour.
Price: Free
Tested on: HTC Desire HD
Content Rating: Everyone
Pros & Cons:
Pros
- Probably the most unusual and funny back story.
- Gorgeous 3D graphics.
- Brilliant physics based game play.
- 360 degree rotation.
- Hilarious sound.
- Very polished interface.
Cons
- Very limited levels in the free version of the game, the idea is to purchase extra levels and features.
Features:
When Toshi dances she kills demons. Somewhat annoyed that this implausible yet very real causation, a demon kidnaps her and she subsequently “forgets” how to walk. This isn’t just any demon either, a ‘cute’ red one according to the story. So, Toshi is somehow left upon a series of platforms surrounded by water. Somewhere on the level there is a dance floor, manage to get Toshi to that dance floor and she is one small step closer to freedom. It makes very little sense, but when has that stood in the way of a good game?!
You get to throw a series of balls at the structure Toshi finds herself on in order to move or remove blocks in her way. Do it correctly and the physics of the game manoeuvre Toshi to her dance floor where she kicks off some quite awful dance moves. You can move your view around 360 degrees, in addition to up and down, creating any number of angles to shoot at. Sometimes you’ll need to destroy a block to slide Toshi onto the dance floor, sometimes shooting a ball will move a block- there are actually lots of clever ways to reach your goal here. The challenge is getting it just right. Whatever you do, don’t hit Toshi with the ball as she dies. Saying that, this isn’t the end of the world and you’ll probably hit her a few times just to see what happens. Also don’t accidentally send her plunging into the surrounding water, she dies too. I say ‘die’ she doesn’t really, instead the level just resets and Toshi is left humorously spluttering water or declaring “I’m still alive” in a funny yet squeaky little voice.
The levels get increasingly harder as you go through them, from very basic levels to moves that are both challenging and complex to pull off. Some blocks get destroyed, some just move, some won’t move at all. There are also slidey ice blocks and bouncy blocks. It all makes sense when you get used to it. The game reminded me very much of a game I reviewed recently: A Monster Ate My Homework. While this game doesn’t quite compare, there are buckets of humour and fun to be had here. Sadly the game only has a limited number of levels, after which you have to purchase extra game packs. While the game is fun, there wasn’t enough for me to feel inclined to purchase more packs.
The game is lots of fun and quite addictive. The music and sound is flawless, although her dance music at the end of each level is diabolical, you begin to understand why the demons hate her so much. The game is certainly worth checking out, even if just for an hour of fun on the free version. The soundbites are quite funny and sending Toshi careening towards the water is delightful fun, even if nothing to do with the purpose of the game. The immense 3D engine that drives the graphics is fantastic, I just wish there was a bit more to the free levels.

Fun Factor:
Lots and lots of silly short-term fun. There’s even more if you are willing to pay for it too, extra game packs give extra levels and more demons for you to rescue Toshi from (if you want to call it rescuing).
Addictive:
Yes, the levels you initially get are very addictive, but it’s quite disillusioning to find you have to pay for more levels. This put me off the game a bit. The game is sugary sweet and fun to play, but the novelty wears off when you realize how short it is.
Graphics:
Graphics are beautiful, quite detailed and very bright, a real plus point of the game. You can move your view around 360 degrees in addition to up and down, enabling you to shoot the balls from any angle. The physics of the game are also spot-on and there is always a logical approach to getting Toshi to the dance floor.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
The sound is really good, and Toshi’s little quips are rather funny. The music is usually quite good, except for the level complete music which Toshi dances to- it’s awful, worse than the very worse pop music. It’s the kind of sugary torturous music that fills the most terrible of nightmares.
