This device can be extremely relevant as it runs Google Chrome operating system, though limited, it still can run; web pages, tools like calculators, intense games and more from the Chrome Store. Check out our brief unboxing and full thorough review will come later when we’ve had a chance to hook it up. Priced at about $329, here are the pics and specs:

I’ve been waiting for Google to come out with a thin client running ChromeOS for a while now. It only makes sense as it augments their web services (Gmail, Docs, apps) and is a perfect drop-in solution for organizations replacing desktops. You already have the monitor, keyboard, etc ready to go.

Chromebox is noiseless, mini-PC form factor, zero maintenance, fast (Solid State Drive, decent midrange CPU, and high end HD3000 GPU) and is peerless for Internet browsing and media consumption. Plug it into an HDTV, add a wireless keyboard with trackpad, and you have the perfect Surf TV, and perfect home computer for the family. When people figure this out, it is going to take a big chunk out of the home PC market.

Contrary to much of the fanboy rant (which no doubt comes from a desire for a Google ad subsidized computer that they can buy with their saved pocket money and then hack to run as a hobby device like the Raspberry Pi). The Chromebox is priced competitively for what you get – you cannot get a Windows PC of an equivalent spec for less. Sure you can get a big box PC with equal RAM, with a noisy cooler fan, noisy PSU fan, noisy, slow mechanical hard drive, and similar spec CPU for about the same price. You can also get a slow Atom based mini-PC with less RAM, a slow and noisy mechanical hard drive, and a weaker GPU for about the same price, but these are lower spec’ed machines.

If you compare the Chromebox to say the iPad 3, the former is about 8 times as fast as the iPad3, and the old Atom based Chromebooks are about 2.5 times as fast as the iPad3, yet we had people complaining about the speed of the old Atom based Chromebooks. It is basically a question of expectations – people will expect a high performance on something that looks like a PC or laptop, but won’t expect the same from a portable low power device like a tablet.
