I think most Android users take at least a smidgen of pride in the look and feel of our Android homescreens. After all, customization is one of the things that separates our devices from those iPhone toys some people still use. With the advent of Android 2.1 Eclair there has been a delightful slurry of live wallpapers in the Android Market that move, can be interacted with and- lets be honest- look pretty cool too. Obviously this is down to taste and a curt level of paranoia regarding battery life, but live wallpapers are hugely popular on the Marketplace and continue to be developed.
Stepping into this ring with a stunning new offering is developer Mariux with RLW Live Wallpaper Pro. The wallpaper comes with a wide range of customizations, so you can essentially configure the look and movement of it in hundreds of different outcomes. Beautifully, the app comes with a number of different themes, in addition to more which can be downloaded from the Market. The app is also open for 3rd part developers to theme themselves, much like the various keyboards and launcher themes we find available in the Market.
So, what is it? RLW Livewallpaper initially looks like a set of high-tech rotating circles, like what you’d see if you were actually being swallowed by neon blue lit disc powered hero himself. These circles initially have a blue glow, but fret not you can theme them in a variety of ways; darker colors as well as pink, silver, orange and red. As mentioned the possibilities are likely to grow if new devs produce and release different themes. Once you’ve settled on the theme, you can also choose how many circles are shown. Further, you can alter their rotation speed, direction and size. There are quite a few options for each so you can have literally hundreds of different looks if you choose to experiment and play about with it.
The beauty of this level of customization is that you can really make the wallpaper yours, giving you greater ownership of the look of your device. The wallpaper is not interactive like some of the water-themed titles or the touchable Nexus live wallpapers. While I don’t think this matters too much I mention it because I know many users like that kind of feature. This aside RLW Live Wallpaper has an incredibly rich and visceral feel to it, it just looks immediately impressive, kind of like a high-tech worm-hole. Usefulness:
OK, so besides looking very cool, live wallpapers are not overly ‘useful’ per se, unless they include a clock or calendar. The joy of RLW Live Wallpaper Pro however is that it is so incredibly configurable, which in its own way is useful if you like the idea of creating unique backgrounds for your Android.
Ease of Use:
Seriously, anyone could configure this. The menus are very clear and simple to navigate and like all live wallpapers you can preview the look before you set it. There are lot of options though so have a good play with it!
Frequently Used:
Obviously the wallpaper is there all the time the screen is switched on, so it mostly running in the background. Because of the range of possible configurations you can tweak it as often as you like- and probably still retain a completely unique look.
Interface:
The interface is very clear and straightforward, options are highlighted as you choose them and menu and sub-menus transitions are smooth and quick.
