Rise of the Blobs – a bold puzzler with unique twist!
Mar 11, 2013 9:05 AM –
Rise of the Blobs is a fun and original puzzle game from the same developers that brought us Wind Up Knight. In this title you help Marsh Mal repel the rising blobs on a cutely animated tower. You throw coloured fruits at the matching blobs and get them to explode in a chain reaction. There are bonus items, multiple gaming modes to try out and various achievements to earn. If you like puzzle games which are fun, bouncy, original and challenging, this is a great game to try.

Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Neat graphics!
- Rich sound!
- Various unlockable modes of gameplay!
- With the cartoony atmosphere, you’d expect the game to be popular with kids, but the gameplay is very difficult straight from the first levels.
- Very menu-heavy.
Rise of the Blobs is a neat little puzzle game with gorgeous graphics, excellent sound, a fun character, lots of game modes to unlock and loads of extras. How to describe it? Well, there’s elements of Tetris (objects fall from the top of the screen and you have to place them), but the environment and the aims are very different. What is notable, however, is that at first it’s actually far, far harder than Tetris…
You control the rotation of the 3D pillar which is surrounded my brightly coloured jelly blobs. These blobs come up in gridded squares so some are linear to each other while some are not. When Marsh Mal throws a green fruit, ensure it lands within a green blob of jelly. If you do this you can tap it again, make it explode and also take out any other green blobs alongside it. It creates a pleasing chain reaction that helps lower the overall height levels of the jelly. If the blobs reach the top, I assume Marsh Mal is overwhelmed and you lose the game.
The idea is to get as high a score as possible. This then can be shared, etc. and you gradually unlock bonus fruit and other extras. There are various modes of play which you unlock the more games you play. These vary a little but they are mostly similar gameplay. With a little time you can unlock some pretty powerful bonuses and extra modes (such as cupcake mode) which is far easier to play. However, initially, the game is pretty tricky and this might put some people off.

To begin with, the game is OK, but it’s initial difficulty is a bit annoying. Once you unlock a few modes, plus a range of new bonus fruit, it can become quite enjoyable.
The more you play it the more addictive it will get. You really do have to persist with it though.
The graphics are really impressive. Beautifully bright and cheerful, it’s essentially a sumptuous cartoon with bouncy jelly. The 3D pillar rotates accurately and looks extremely smooth.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
The sound is excellent, some very enjoyable music and loads of cool squelchy-exploding sound effects. You can turn the sound off, but it’s actually very high quality.
