AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Remote desktop publishing for Android devices

Cons

  •  Not suitable for non-techies

Features:

Remote RDP (Remote Desktop Publishing) Android App is a cool tool to connect to a remote computer via your Android phone! When I first saw RDP used on an iPhone ($25) a few years back, I was impressed with the idea that you could access and control your FULL desktop from your cellphone. Walter Yongtao Wang brings the same technology to Android at a lower cost.

Please note: you must enable RDP on your remote computer you’re connecting to. You must know your machines public IP address (or internal IP address if only using within your network). If behind a firewall, enable the correct access. If your router holds the firewall, enable Port Forwarding. Do a search on how to setup RDP.

You access and control a list of computers, perform functions such as copy/paste, console, SD Card access on phone and sounds. Even change the resolution setting (provided your phone can handle higher resolutions, but the default 800×600 is fine).

Slight Gripe Alert: I do notice you get a warning “Low Memory” immediately and assume the current state of Android devices don’t yet offer enough internal memory to handle cache.

Usefulness:

Remote RDP is useful to IT professionals such as network administrators or tech geeks familiar with the technology. Not intended for everyone.

Ease of Use:

The pain is in the setup of your own network. This app is under the assumption you already have that setup correctly; else it’s a matter of plugging in your IP address, then your computers credentials.

Interface:

The user interface will eventually be your computers’ desktop squeezed to the small screen.

The brackets in the app name on his site call it “Remote (RDP)”. These are pretty important, Remote RDP makes no sense as the R in RDP stands for Remote!

  2. NB says:

This is a fantastic app, works perfectly and it’s fast over even a GPRS only network.

If you need to have ocassional access to your remote server(s) to check status, turn services on/off, this is a life saver (it has been for me over the last month or so).

    3.9 is more 4.5 !!

  3. radio_babylon says:

this app is a must-have for me. i havent needed it often, and it has some issues running on the fairly limited G1 hardware, but i tell you what… when you need it, its a life-saver…

for those concerned over the security implications of using RDP over the cell network (and opening RDP on the target network/machine to the cell network), i use connectbot to tunnel the connection over ssh (key required, no password or keyboard interactive auth), making for a much more secure implementation.

  4. ucantblamem says:

Does it have the ability to “right-click”?

    • NB says:

Yes it does. You use the trackball on the device to do that. I use the applicatio mostly to remotelly control a SQL Server. Sometimes I need to activate or make a service inactive and that is done by right-clicking some element in the screen.

I either position the cursor on the screen using my fingers or using the trackball, then I click on the trackball and it works as right-click.

  5. Mike says:

Will this work with the Motorala droid to access my Mac?

  6. Trae McCombs says:

    Problems with mouse control.

I tried this on one of the sprint reps Samsung Moment, which I really want, and while it worked and it was FAST, it was a PAIN to try and control the cursor. I tried using a stylus, and that didn’t work. :(

I checked into seeing if you could get a bluetooth mouse for the Samsung Moment and was told it wouldn’t work.

At this point I’m not sure what to do.

It would be awesome if you could control the mouse with the little mouseball like trackball device that is located on the phone but that didn’t seem to work.

    Ideas? Suggestions?

I can’t see buying the phone if that doesn’t work. And it’s really the biggest reason I’d switch from my Blackberry to it.

    Thanks!
    Trae

    • Trae McCombs says:

Ugh, I failed to mention the issue with mouse control came from trying to touch the screen with my finger. It would work to some degree, but it really wasn’t precise. Trying to do very simple things like minimizing a window was impossible. (not next to impossible, but totally impossible)

  7. candabi says:

I think that the best way, perhaps using the the little mouse point. Other idea could be using an bluetooth external trackball

  8. Brian says:

Will this app allow you to control a ubuntu desktop on port 5900 (same as vnc)?

    • You must use Remote VNC to access Linux and Mac OS usually. There is XRDP in Linux, after you install it, you can use Remote RDP to access the Linux (using legacy mode). There is also third party rdp server for Mac OS, but I never got chance to try it.

  9. Carlos says:

The site http://www.toremote.com/Home mentions that you can connect through a TLS connection. Has anyone heard of a version that can connect through TS Gateway?

  10. Eric says:

I have used my Google phone (Nexus One) to download the application. The software can connect to my server but I have problem inputting my password. How can I activate the keyboard?

  11. katiecam says:

My desktop has two screens. Can this toggle between them?

  12. NB says:

I use a Motorola Milestone, will this application work with the keyboard and pad on this device?

  13. Matt says:

Anybody try this using non-standard rdp port?

  14. Colin says:

I am considering getting the Verizon Droid. Will this application support Pinch & Zoom. I really need a larger desktop area than will fit on the droid screen. It will work as long as I can pan, pinch & zoom.

  15. Rick says:

I have Sprints Overdrive Wi-Fi hot spot device for my home network and ISP.
Will Remote RDP work with this type of ISP?

  16. Where can i buy PRO VERSION for REMOTE-RDP ?

  17. Rickybee says:

I’m trying this out with the demo before I buy on my Droid. But I can’t seem to enter any extended characters into the password field using the physical keyboard. If I hold the ALT key down and press keys nothing happens.
I managed to log in to a computer that doesn’t have extended characters in the password and opened up notepad. Turns out some keys work others don’t, =-; and the numbers don’t, others like *&: do work. If I close the keyboard, rotate the screen and use the onscreen keyboard most work, except the ; key.
During this experiment I also had a few ‘force close’ issues. I don’t think I’ll buy until these issues are worked out.

  18. Yeonki says:

I cannot type some keys on my mobile phone in this app. for example, forward slash, back slash. I use LG android phone which has OS version 1.4.

  19. Raj says:

Can i get the source code of this app. ? if yes, how?

  20. Frank says:

Verizon Droid Incredible – the keyboard does not show up when selected. I am using the Demo version.

  21. Steveo says:

This is what you people get for falling into the hands of a advertising companies linux distro. Use a windows mobile device and you get the native RDP for free. Using Android is just a way for them to watch every single thing you do on your device. People who use android are retarded. Damn tools.

    • Wow… this coming from someone still using an antiquated mobile operating system. Get with the times and upgrade yourself. Better lose your conspiracy theories and get some concrete facts as your spitting a big wad in the wind.
