Reaper – play this awesome hack & slash RPG platformer
Sep 23, 2013 10:54 AM –
Reaper is an engaging and original new RPG that is perfectly crafted for touch screens. The game includes impressive graphics, an interesting narrative and a great adventure. You become the Black Swordsman who slices his way through the land making friends and enemies in equal measure. Gameplay is RPG, but the interaction/action elements are pure platforming. The blending of these styles works brilliantly in-game and should appeal to fans of both genres.
Price: Free plus in-app game upgrades
Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Smooth graphics!
- Blends platforming and RPG genres!
- Engaging story line!
- Awesome action moves!
- Great sound!
Reaper is a deeply immersive role playing game where you take charge of the Black Swordsman’s adventure through a fantasy world. Meet people, befriend some, kill others. There’s on ongoing narrative to keep you interested, plus the usual levels to accumulate, items to attain and buy, plus a wide range of nefarious enemies to plunder. You essentially zip around the land, having conversations, making decisions and agreeing to missions. Once you enter a mission however, it gets even more interesting.
The mission elements of the game are built like traditional platform game levels. You can run around and jump, pull off excruciatingly cool moves and generally hack and slash your way to rewards, gold or other goodies. There are a variety of enemies to take on both on land and in the air. Your moves are very cool and controls are simple taps and presses, meaning you do not have to be overly dexterous to play the game.
Strategy is actually a big part of gameplay. There are times where you can walk away from a conflict or, even when fighting, withdraw and spread out your attackers for easier fighting one-on-one. This means that, while you can flail around wildly if you want to, a bit of thought is needed if you want to survive.
Reaper is lots of fun to play and it’s not too difficult to make progress. It’s a genuinely free game, although to expand the adventure you have a series of options to make that result in an in-app purchase of upgraded versions of the game; this isn’t about buying buckets of crystals or chests of gold that will only go so far, instead you buy more adventures. For example, the full game ‘Adventure Edition’ will put you back £1.99 ($2.99). Destiny Edition is bumped to £2.49 ($3.99) and Dark Legend Edition is £2.99 (around $3.80). These offer additional modes, levels and extra gameplay. The choice is yours, but for the additional experience- the developers have clearly put a lot of time, effort and quality into this, I’m pretty convinced that the packages are worth it.

If you enjoy either platform games or RPG’s this is definitely something you are going to really enjoy. It blends these elements relatively seamlessly, meaning the experience is fun, smooth and deeply enjoyable.
You quickly get into the routine of gameplay; adventuring and communicating with different characters, plus the platform elements which are pure hack n’ slash style platforming. I think the nature of RPG’s mean that they can take a little time to get into but the gameplay is automatically involving here and I noticed the learning curve is relatively steep but certainly fair.
The graphics are 2D but the action is rich, smooth and deliciously animated throughout. The game reeks of top notch design and user experience focus.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
It would be easy to forget the sound, but the music and effects are really great and round off a superb gaming experience.
