Railroad Kingdom – tycoon game where you invite friends to manage busy train company Install

Railroad Kingdom is a tycoon game where you have to run and manage a busy cosmopolitan train company. Buy trains and send them all over the world. Build cool VIP buildings in your train station city, complete missions and build your rail empire from the ground up. It’s a typical tycoon/freemium game supported by the large Papaya Social Gaming network. The game relies a lot on interaction with friends, so if you’re on that network already it’s incredibly useful!

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Engrossing for tycoon game fans!
  • Colourful and detailed graphics!
  • Lots of items to buy!

Cons

  • Relies far too much on needing friends willing to play the game too.
  • Poor tutorial.

Features:

Railroad Kingdom is a tycoon game where you have to build your own railway enterprise. You begin with just one small train and a default in-game friend to send it to. You can buy all kinds of different trains to expand your collection and send them all over the world. There are several real-life cities in the game, full of tourist attractions and lots more places to explore if you have friends playing the game too.

Each city has its own soundtrack and each are vibrant and full of colour. Your own city has potential too, and you get the opportunity to build and create gorgeous VIP buildings which increase the money you earn. While most gameplay revolves around keeping buildings clean and sending trains, you also have features like the daily lottery and decorating your trains.

The game reminded me of many other popular tycoon games in that you face a city-view screen with all the menus and controls around the edges. It’s relatively easy to play, but you do need to explore yourself as the tutorial is pretty poor compared with various other tycoon games out there. It’s problematic as things are not labelled very well, which means you can open some menus and have no idea what they do.

There are other little issues too- such as the way you can’t explore the edges of the city as the view just stops, meaning you can’t clean buildings easily. However, I think the problem that might restrict the game the most is the fact it wholly relies on your either having online gaming friends already (which might be the case and therefore not an issue) or your willingness to invite your friends to download and play the game themselves. In fact, one early mission demands it, meaning you can’t progress unless you get at least one friend on board. Now, if you’re a big social gamer and have lots of buddies willing to help you out, this isn’t a problem. However, if this isn’t the case you might risk alienating your friends by inviting them (as anyone with a Facebook account and who has received countless gaming invites can testify). Therefore, it’s not a casual game meant for playing here and there by yourself, it requires you to use social sites to invite and play others.

Fun Factor:

I think if you’re really into trains and tycoon games, this is a match made in heaven for you and you’ll see around the negatives. It is fun to send trains off and build different VIP buildings, however, the game’s reliance on involving friends might kill it dead for you if gaming is more of an individual pursuit for you… which is typically the case for tycoon builder games.

Addictive:

Railroad Kingdom has that addictive casual feel to it, just like other tycoon-style games. Such games reward visiting it for short bursts as often as possible. If that fits in with the way you like to play games, this is ideal. I think anyone who has played games like Farmville might adapt easily to mobile titles like this.

Graphics:

The graphics are brightly coloured and offer a nice amount of detail. I don’t think we’re at a stage where mobile tycoon games are dazzling people with impressive graphics, but Railroad Kingdom features some levels of polish. Nothing to blow ones trumpet about, but pretty nonetheless.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

The music is generally quite bad, although each of the real-world cities features a different music track. To be honest, I found myself switching the sound off quite quickly.

Should you Download Railroad Kingdom? Because of the games overt reliance on using friends to expand your empire, Railroad Kingdom is only going to suit people already using Papaya as a social gaming platform, and already have a number of friends either playing the game or up for trying it out. This unfortunately prevents other gamers from getting involved unless they want to invite non-gaming friends into the network. Anyone with a Facebook account knows how annoying gaming spam can be, so it’s quite a risk in my opinion. If the game didn’t force this requirement, it would offer far more potential. On that basis, therefore, if you have lots of gamer friends on Papaya, definitely try it out. If not, it’s probably best to avoid.
