Quento – okay you Mathletes, beef up your simple arithmetic skills with this app Install

Quento is a robust, challenging and multi-platform puzzle game that sees you adding and taking away numbers in cute math-based gameplay. No, come back… it’s still good! If you enjoy Sudoku or enjoy being tested on your mental arithmetic, this is a neat little game to get stuck into.

AndroidTapp.com Android Game Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Smooth graphics!
  • Challenging gameplay!
  • Simple and elegant!

Cons

  • Might be improved with additional modes.

Features:

How would you make 6 from the numbers 4, 3 and 5? If that has you rapidly thinking… (4-3,+5) then Quento is for you! Set on a 3×3 grid with numbers and + and - signs, you glide your finger over the squares to create your sum. It’s incredibly easy to play but the sums themselves and the numbers you have to work with make it very tricky indeed.

Each level first gets you to complete three sums using only two numbers; so, say you want 7, would might be able to add 3 to 4. However, you then have to use three numbers so you might need to add 4 to 8 and then take away 5. I hope that makes sense, it really is easy when you see the game in action! It’s free and with that you get options to create sums with both 2 and 3 numbers. For about $1 you can unlock the 4 numbers option which is more difficult.

The game is very minimalistic to look at, bold colours differentiate the levels, but it’s remarkably smooth and nicely animated. The game is wonderfully tough at times, but there are often sums that are easy to complete- it’s all about being able to see the answer, or working it out quickly.

As lovely as the game is, you can’t help but feel it could be more. You really only have the single mode of play and, although you get to play with more numbers, everything might feel more enhanced if there was a time constraint mode of some kind or greater grid sizes. This would make it a very different game from the one you perhaps begin with, but the model itself is robust and I think players would value more options.

Fun Factor:

If you enjoy these kind of little puzzles and quizzes, it’s lots of fun and great for testing your mental mathematics abilities. If you’re an aspiring mathlete, this is a good sharpener!

Addictive:

The game is so easy to pick up and play and it taps into part of the brain that likes this kind of simple testing. Subsequently it becomes hard to resist.

Graphics:

The visuals in the game are very basic yet clean and crisp. It reminded me a little of the Metro design of Windows 8 and Windows Phone mobile devices. This isn’t in any way a bad thing for a game and it keeps the graphics very sharp and crisp.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

Like the graphics, the sound is very simple yet also effective. You get tings and beeps when sums are completed or if you make a mistake. There’s an additional sound when you complete a round.

Should you Download Quento? In many ways Quento reminds me of one of those little exercises you find in brain training games. It’s simple, challenges a particular aspect of your intelligence and is both fun and addictive at the same time. If this kind of thing taps into your mind and you find you can’t resist those little math questions, definitely give it a try.
