Features:

Pumpkins vs. Monsters is an excellent puzzle action game for the Android platform. In the game you have to maneuver pumpkin patches in to groups of 3 or 4 to throw at oncoming hordes of monsters. As you progress through the game you fight more and more difficult monsters and can purchase power ups to help your pumpkin patch defeat the oncoming hordes.

The game has two different modes: Story Mode and Endless Mode (essentially survival mode). In Story Mode there are three different zones: Protection of the Territory, The Mummy Returns, and Mayan War. Each zone has a total of 15 levels, with each level being considerably harder than the last.

The object of the game is to kill waves of oncoming monsters by stacking pumpkins together and hurling them at the oncoming hordes. The pumpkin patch is a 4 by 7 grid that is constantly filling up with new pumpkins. In order to throw pumpkins at the oncoming monsters you have to stack the pumpkins in to a group of at least 3 of the same color. This can be difficult because there are various color pumpkins in the patch, as well as a randomly placed gravestone. The gravestone and mismatched pumpkin colors create a nice little puzzle to solve in order to take down the monsters.

As you play through story mode the game continually adds new and unique challenges. As I played through “Protection of the Territory,” I kept encountering new monsters which were much harder to kill than in previous levels. The initial undead minion only took one pumpkin to kill. While the new and harder monsters would sometimes take three hits to die. This encouraged you to take more time forming your groups of pumpkins to shoot out at the hordes. If you grouped poorly it could mean the end of your life, and you would have to retry the level.

In the game there is a shop to by usable items. You are allowed to make item purchases before every level. You purchase items with gold won from killing zombies. The way to earn the most gold is to get monster killing multipliers. You do this by trying to take down as many monsters as possible with only one set of pumpkins. If you kill every monster on the screen you get a “perfect kill” multiplier and lots of gold coins to purchase upgrades and items at the store.

Some of the power ups in the store are dynamite, shields, pumpkin masks, and upgrades to the power of your pumpkins. The shields are the cheapest item to buy and they allow you to fix the wall to the pumpkin patch if a monster is starting to break through. The pumpkin masks are land mines that can be placed on the field and kill monsters as they walk over them. The dynamite does what you would expect and explodes killing a small cluster of zombies. You can also pay a premium price to upgrade each color pumpkin’s damage to boost the effectiveness of each attack.

Endless Mode is exactly what the title says a mode in which you fight an endless stream of monsters with your pumpkin throwing skills. Your high scores are saved in Endless Mode in order to allow you to compete with yourself, but unfortunately their is no OpenFeint support to enable you to compete with others.

Fun Factor:

Pumpkins vs Monsters is extremely fun to play. I love the combination of a puzzle game with an action game. It gives you a challenging experience that is fun and fast paced, but is not monotonous.

With each new level comes a new challenge and there are plenty of unlockable power ups and levels in the game to keep you interested and involved in the gameplay. I generally am not a huge gamer on my phone or elsewhere, but I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game in play sessions of a half an hour to an hour.

Addictive:

This game is extremely addictive and will keep you coming back for more. This game has the addictiveness of Angry Birds, but the fast paced game play of Gun Bros. That is a killer combo for addictive goodness. This is one game that I can’t stay away from for long.

Graphics:

The graphics in the game are good, but not spectacular like Further Beyond Fighting or Riptide. This game has cartoon like graphics which contribute to the fun feel of the game, but are just a little bit behind the times. I would love to see the developer release an HD version of this game for tablets and other higher end devices.  As it is the game still is excellent, and the lack of HD graphics don’t detract from the game environment, but an HD version would really bring this game to the foreground of the Android gaming community.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

Pumpkins vs. Monsters makes no use of the accelerometer or vibration. Accelerometer use is impossible for the play style of this game, so it’s absence is in no way a detractor. Vibration could possibly be added, but I am not sure that it would actually add to the games enjoyment. So I am glad that the developer ignored them in the favor of an excellent soundtrack.

The soundtrack reminds me of Halloween, a Ballet, A Circus, and a Comedic Cartoon all in one. It contributes greatly to the goofy yet mildly eerie feel to the game. Unlike most games I prefer to play Pumpkins vs. Monsters with the sound on. The developers hit a homerun on the sounds for this game.

I came across this one myself recently thanks to the “related games” in the Android Market. At first I thought it would be yet another clone of PvZ, but it turned out to be something more original. I really like this game a LOT. OpenFeint support would make it perfect.

The pink (purple?) pumpkin is against the mayan warriors. The big one is really strong. So to upgrade they will be hurt more.

I know i had the same issue too, until I figured out that they are meant to destroy cementary stones in the pumpkin field. Just drag them and place them on top of the stones and they will eat it.

Actually the vibration is used. In Boss Wave (after completing all the 15 plays in a stroy) there bigger and bigger tanks. If they shoot the phone is vibrating.

I’m a little bit disappointed that the extra features (column killer flash, freezing grenade, stone eater) cannot be bought using money collented in the game, just buy for real money. Or collect the rare diamonds and win on the slot machine. Brrr…
