Press (RSS Reader) – the best news reading experience on Android
Jan 13, 2014 11:45 AM –
This time last year, Google Reader was still with us but since its demise, many apps have stepped up to provide an alternative solution. Of these, Press (RSS Reader) is perhaps one of the most beautiful and functional. It offers a minimalist yet feature-rich experience which lacks the clutter of similar apps and presents your news in an elegant user interface that looks amazing on any device.
Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Impressive interface!
- Minimalist design!
- Plenty of usability features!
- Syncs with Feedly!
- Supports immersive mode!
- Very fast!
Is it just me is does it feel like the Google Play Store is literally flooded with news apps? We’ve covered plenty of popular news apps recently; Digg, Flyne and Circa all being awesome news reader apps that are worth checking out.
My personal favourite for a while was actually Digg, the reinvented news service that now amalgamates all your favourite stories and sources in an easy to use platform. However, Press is now testing my allegiance with a gorgeous user interface, responsive navigation and loads of cool usability options that set it apart form the rest of the crowd. Simply put, if you value UI and functionality, this arguably raises the bar on nearly all other news apps.
Press is drop-dead gorgeous to use, and full of options, functions and customization
Last year, Google finally closed the door on Google Reader, so it’s hardly surprising that there has been a variety of applications looking for fill the void. Along with those mentioned, Flipboard, Feedly and Google’s own Newsstand have all grown in popularity. However, if you like your style understated and minimalist, Press is where you should look.
Review your unread stories really easily, explore your favourite topics and categories, star stories you want to refer back to, share items to your social circles and add various news feed sources through services such as Feedbin, Feedly, Feed Wrangler and Fever. You can save stories to read later with the likes of Pocket and Instapaper. You can change from a light to a dark theme and utilize Readability for an even smoother reading experience. Press also supports immersive mode, meaning interruption-free news reading.
Few apps are as easy to use and intuitive.
Thanks to very cool navigation arrows along the bottom of the screen, you can flip from story to story really smoothly and, while it’s not like an actual newspaper, it looks exceptional on a tablet. I especially liked how fast the app is, stories seem to load up immediately and the user experience is second to none.
For people who like fast access to their news feeds, Press offers a cool, minimalist widget which scrolls through the section of your choice and can be used to access the full app with just a tap. If that wasn’t enough, there are loads more bells and whistles than can be included here. The settings can be accessed from the top right of the app and you can explore all the different options and preferences available to you.
The feel of Press is sublime and has clearly been designed with the user-experience in mind.
Reading apps are plentiful, but it’s rare you get quite the balance of UI, usability and features that you see in Press. Considering too that the service is free, it’s something you really have to try- no matter how much you love your current favourite.
