Perplexicon – play this addictive game if you’re tired of all the Scrabble & Boggle clones!

Perplexicon is the new and highly addictive word game from the same developer as Word Mix, perhaps one of the first games I became engrossed in when I got my first Android device in 2009. The new title is fiendishly engaging, original and perfectly challenging for puzzle and word-game fans.
Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Original gameplay!
- Free to play!
- Neat graphics and good music!
Perplexicon is a rarity in the Google Play Store, especially the word game genre, in that’s it’s very original. I’m a big word game fan (in terms of hours wasted/spent, my top three is Ruzzle, Word Weasel and Word Mix) and I’ve genuinely never played anything quite like Perplexicon. With so many ‘Boggle’ clones out there, it seems to be tough for developers to come up with something truly different, and yet Perplexicon most definitely is.
Many word games- like clones of Scrabble and Boggle, see you looking for words on a rack or in a grid. Your mind becomes accustomed to looking for patterns- words you recognise- and this is where you make scores. With Perplexicon, you’re still looking to create words but the size of the grid and the letter beneath requires far more strategy and forward thought.

There is a 7×7 grid before you, some squares are populated, some not. There are a preset number of green lettered squares which have to be removed to complete the level and there is a set time limit and a set score to achieve before the time runs out. Letters are introduced to the screen from a rack below and you select where each letter goes. Where you choose to put the letters and which letters are nearby let you create new words. When a word is created, the letters will disappear and points are rewarded.
This freedom to create words yourself, rather than just identifying them from the grid, is refreshing to see. It creates a very different challenge to many word games and introduces strategy that requires you to see several moves ahead. This is made additionally complicated by both bonus potions (Freeze, Bomb and Antidote) and Virus squares (letters or tiles which ‘infect’/damage other letters if not dealt with).
…the game is incredibly addictive…
Gameplay is nicely introduced and you get just the right amount of tutorials to guide you through initially. Once introduced, the game is incredibly addictive. You progress through level after level, acquiring the scores to complete each. If you enjoy word games, you’ll find gameplay fun. In many ways it’s beautifully taxing and sure to keep your synapses hot.
Music-wise you get a Hogswart-style ditty…
The backdrop of the gameplay is the graphics and sound. The graphics are standard word game fare, smooth, responsive and smartly developed. Very few word games have ‘outstanding’ graphics as there is little need for visual wonder when you’re against the clock and trying to find a high scoring combination, but Perplexicon features nice graphics which compliment gameplay well. Music-wise you get a Hogswart-style ditty which is good quality and doesn’t put you off your stride.
