A few days back we told you about the Sprint HTC Hero leak of the latest Android 2.1 software, now we are happy to announce the official update is available on HTC’s website with instructions on Sprint’s website for customers to perform the manual update themselves. We’ll have a guide up shortly, but if you haven’t updated from the old 1.5… now is the time to do so!
Note: the update will wipe your phone and specific to Sprint version of the HTC Hero. Concerned about backing up your contacts, SMS, email, apps, etc? Try MyBackup Pro for complete backup solutions or WaveSecure for SMS and call logs, try AppManager for apps, and your Gmail account automatically backs up Contacts. It will not come as an automatic update thus you must install it yourself.

One of the best parts of having an Android phone is I'M POSTING THIS FROM A TRAIN! The train is ...
The last leaked ROM and this Official one have the same version #. Should I bother doing it?
Yes you are correct, the leaked release and the official release are exactly the same. The only reason I suggest updating anyway is for the sake of warranty, it’s always good to have the official release from the carrier. The official update will override the leaked update if you do decided to install even though they are the same. Hope this helps
May I use this update if I don’t have Sprint version just regular (i’m from Europe)? I can’t find support for “normal” HTC Hero on HTC site.
Unfortunately you will not be able to as it Sprint specific apps and services embedded.
hey my htc mobile sent me an automatic update. software version matches. anyone else get this?
I downloaded the update and went to open it but it wont open on my computer. I’m a Mac, and I can’t find the file that will let me open this up.
I believe it requires a Windows based PC to update, will find out for sure.
I thought they were going to release it over the air? Did they change their mind and decide to just have people install it themselves?
I’m a Linux user. I have nothing at all against the Windows or any other OS, but it bugs me that I need to have a Windows just for phone & nav updates. Now, I was careful to pick a linux-based Android phone to avoid keeping another computer for updates – but no.
Windows might be great, but it also needs a costly virus protection…I wish Android phones could be updated from Linux.
Android is good but their is a lot of lieing goes on I found. For starters no update for Google Maps navigation, Google Earth is not there and heaps more I have G2 hero i was not even aware of a sprint version? Is their an update for the Hero my phone is about 2 months old so maybe i have newest update..
