Nope! You cannot attach a USB Drive the Nexus 7

Sorry friends who asked me, “can you attach a USB drive to the Nexus 7“, you cannot. :-( The reason it was asked so much is because it comes in 8GB and 16GB flavors with no SD Card slot for additional storage other than the cloud… and I’m sure this is what Google intends you to do with the device. Fingers crossed some hacker will break this rule! If it happens, you’ll be forced to attach a USB adapter but it will give you the benefit of a ton of additional storage!

Try with a USB powered y-cable. Most android devices that support OTG (bionic, droid 4, Razr) can read usb items, but the micro usb on the DEVICE does NOT provide power. Using a y-cable, you can get the power from a powered usb hub or another usb port.

How can the MicroUSB OTG port not provide power? The adapter would never work and therefore never be built and sold if it can’t draw power from the MicroUSB port. This seems to be just a driver support issue where Google doesn’t want you tapping cheap flash storage so you’d have to buy the $250 model.

Would it work if you used an SD card reader? I know it’d be similar as just plugging in a USB drive but I’m new to the whole usb hosting thing so I thought I’d ask :)
